We first broke the news to everyone that the Aveo nameplate would be replaced with the Sonic name on Tuesday. Thursday, it was confirmed by Chevrolet that the Sonic was indeed the new name for Chevy's sub-compact car. Upon first glance, the Sonic looks very similar to the Aveo RS concept we saw in Detroit, a car that was welcomed with a great reaction here on GMI. When Aveo was then displayed as a production model, it lost some of the sharp lines and a lot of the bold look of the concept. The Sonic brings back all of the bold themes of the Aveo RS concept, ditching the boring lines of the production Aveo.

Most of the revised body work seems to have been in the rear. Starting with a stronger line down the center of the car (1), that merges in with the heavy creases that act almost as a hood over the tail lights. The rear doors also seem to receive a tighter look, with the black trim coming to a sharp point over the smoother look from the Aveo (4). Gone is the lower chrome treatment highlighting the windows (5), that was shown in both the Aveo concept and Aveo production car. The brightwork is something that should have been kept from the Aveo concept. Bob Lutz liked it, and I think it is a good idea to stick with it.

The tail lights also receive a redesign for production (3), with the top light being a solid tail lamp, while the reverse light looks to be moved down to the rear barrel, and the turn signals are moved to its own pod on the outside of the tail light assembly. The biggest change is the wrap around rear glass (2), giving the C pillar a swept back look, adding more visual speed to the car. The biggest and boldest change to the car is bringing back the C pillar of the Aveo RS concept. The Aveo production car had a very upright C pillar, and visually destroys the look of that car. One thing that I am very happy to see, is that the hidden rear door handles are still there! This look gives the illusion of a three door hatchback.

Overall, the Sonic looks sharper, bolder, and much more aggressive than the Aveo production car, giving the Aveo RS concept car a chance to hit the showrooms as it should have been. This car will give Chevy a car to do battle with the likes of the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, and the new Ford Fiesta. The Chevrolet Sonic will most likely debut at Detroit to show off more of its new bold lines. So with a quick revision for production, Chevrolet relaunches a new hot hatch (and sedan) into what is turning out to be a very hotly contested segment in a growing market. Sonic also shares a lot of its body lines with its even smaller sibling, the Spark. The two of these cars, combined with the Cruze, make up a strong list of compact cars that are not willing to give up style and features because of their size or segment. When, not if, gas prices start to go up, Chevrolet will be there to offer a large spread of fuel efficient vehicles Only this time around they will not look like afterthoughts or cause you to hide your face when driving them.

Do you seriously think they would fabricate a 3 dimensional deception made of steel? Its the real deal whether you like it or not. whether i like it or not..its reality...

if it were a fake...do you realize it would cost atleast a hundred million dollars to execute?

GM needed to make these visual changes to keep up with Ford and Mazda. The Aveo premiere car lacked the visual omph of the RS and immediately put it behind the Fiesta, a car released over a year ago, in the looks department.

So GMI has received confirmation that the rendered image is the production vehicle? If so, is the LTZ shown fairly representative of the model or is it what was originally pegged as the Aveo RS (ie. a distinctly different trim level)?

Kudos to GM if they made changes to the presentation and not just the name. With any luck the exterior design of the base model will make an impression with options to up the coolness (see also: Fiesta).

Amazing how big of a difference those small changes make in the Sonic design. I was disappointed in the production Aveo, but the Sonic looks a lot better. I can only hope they applied the same treatment to the front end.

I am a little confused. GM typically keeps the small cars and hatches away from the US, because the US customer doesn't like small and hatches. But I seen noone here ever complain about the Aveo.
This new Sonic sure looks 100% better than the current Aveo!

REALLY looks nice. And best of all, it will be made in Michigan!

Having studied each design further I think that there has been a complete reskin of the Sonic compared to the Aveo, which leads me to think that maybe there will be a larger GMNA model and smaller model for everyone else:

  • Completely new rear hatch- sharper rear window lines, number plate recess decends all the way to the bumper, stronger lines continuing from the shoulders, black surrounds behind rear window completely removed.
  • Gap between rear wheel arch and rear door wider on Sonic.
  • Side window surrounds completely different on Sonic

I was actually thinking the very same thing. I could see the Aveo in developing markets and the Sonic "body" whatever they happen to call it in North America and Europe. Europe could actually see both bodies to designate different trim/performance levels.

I'm very please with the changes made to the State side body. It certainly better reflects the show car. I hope there will continue to be and "RS" option.

Does anyone know what the pricing will be in the States?

The Sonic looks awesome. :) Can't wait to see the front and the changes there. Hopefully it's as amazing as the rest of the car.

I do wish the production version had kept the sliver of chrome at the bottom of the windows. Otherwise, I think the car looks great.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but basically the only thing missing from the RS concept is the chrome piece, the wheels, and center dual exhaust? I just wonder if those will all be available on an RS package? The dual exhaust I would tend to doubt, but the other two are certainly possible. Of course, more than an RS package I want an SS package for this car with the 2.0T. But the RS package would certainly be nice as far as a visual upgrade goes.

One other difference I noticed is that the trailing edge of the back door on the RS went straight down from the top all the way to the bottom, not curving around the wheel arch, whereas the Sonic line curves a bit around the wheel arch. I like the straight line a little better but it's probably harder to manufacture.

I'm not complaining though. I'm shocked how much better the Sonic looks than the Paris Aveo, which was a little disappointing after seeing the RS show car. This is a great looking small car.

I'll have to say I'm relieved they made changes to this car after seeing the production Aveo. I still think Sonic is a stupid name, but it now looks much closer to the RS concept. The production Aveo lost all sportiness in the rear 3/4 view and the Sonic restores most of it. I have to wonder though, why are they essentially going to have two different bodies of the same car? I thought GM was over doing that, especially in this price point, I would think it would be prohibitably expensive. Eithr way, very glad for the changes!

Good on GM for now having a truly competitive Compact Car set, with the Chevvy Spark, Aveo/Sonic, and the Cruze. And with the Verano they can attack the Top end of the market. now that you have the volume players set Gm, hows about rewarding Holden with some nice export programs to the US.

How long before we see the Cadillac Soniq?;)
Seriously, this small car is good enough looking that people would give it a test drive, and if it drives well, may buy it. Not my cup of tea this go-around (put me down for an Impala/Chevelle SS this time), but it could be a great simple commuter car that pulls down 45 mpg or more. Great job!:)

I'm pleased with the updates, now just so long as the drivetrain isn't a piece, we'll do just fine with this car...

Interesting. I'm wondering if it will be decked out with all the other details the Aveo RS concept had...including that awesome blue paint job. I'm not usually into blue cars, but that shade really looked nice in person.

It's not just good.... It's Sonic Good!

The concept's side mirrors are a better shape then the Sonic's production ones and it was moved from a door mount to near the a pillar... but it's insignificant.

I can't decide if I like the car more with the chrome bright work on the window sills or not.

The other changes all look good and it's refreshing to see GM take these steps to improve the vehicle's visual impact. It's certainly would be easy enough for them not to bother. See, the New GM is better then Old GM!
