Someone asked me this morning if I knew whether or not GM was planning a coupe for the new Chevy Cruze.

I replied that I had no idea, but that it would certainly be a candidate for strong sales if past sales were any indication.

A quick search on google turned up the photo representation below.

Question: If GM were to product a Chevy Cruze two door version - should it be a coupe or hatchback?

I'd go with a hatchback myself but why not offer more variants?

why not just make everyone happy? If car is a success GM should produce it as follows:

4 Door Sedan
2 Door Coupe
2 Door Convertible
4 Door Hatch (and/or 2 door hatch if enough interest)

Cavalier had all of these bodies styles produced so why not the Cruze.
I'm in total agreement jb!!

The Cav also had an honest to goodness wagon at one point too

so how about a Cruze Sportstourer? ;)

That definatly looks good in my eyes if i was in the market for a compact hatch back. Espcially if they inlude those coold led pieces in the lower section, maybe as the fog lights like you see on the new ford edge?

Definatly need to do atleast a sedan, coupe and vert version. If they can by chance have it as a hard top vert and still have decent fuel economy that would be such a big win. As for the hatch part, should be only a 5 door, not a 3 door since there is the Sonic for here. So it should go like this for the small car line up:

Spark
Sonic Hatch
Sonic Sedan
Cruze Coupe SS trim as well
Cruze Sedan SS trim as well
Cruze wagon/5door
Cruze Vert
:bounce: for the SS maybe a nice 2.0T? 220 hp? :yup:

I want a coupe & a convertible version too like this one =)

Thats nice as h&!!, I could see that as a small Chevy Kappa vehicle cause it has RWD front/rear overhang proportions (IMO), but if the chevy could make a cruze look like that, man chevy would have a winner on their hands.

That does look awesome, does any other automaker that the cruze goes up against have a vert?

I know Corolla only has a sedan form, Civic as coupe and sedan, and the Focus has Sedan, and a 5 door set for 2012 so if Chevy could do a vert i think lots of people would buy it if done right. Start with a coupe and if there is great feed back, design a vert and do what they did in the Camaro and stiifen up parts so it feels like the coupe version still. Hm, maybe chevy can be a step ahead of the competiton instead of behind? :D

I would love to see a true coupe, but feel that a sport sedan/"four door coupe" with hidden rear access doors (Sonic/Veloster) would offer virtually the same level of appeal and practicality without investing significant resources.

Update the existing design with more aggressive visual cues, offer an optional performance package and build it on the same line with the same tooling.

Win win.

Ok, I would prefer a three door hatch, but I also agree that Chevrolet should have a coupe version of the Cruze. I seeno reason why there could not be a premium three door hatch as a Buick with a 260hp 2.0T Ecotec hiding under the hood

......oh and a nifty Haldex RWD biased AWD system.

Yes to both.
Hatch as per the Holden design, 5dr and 3dr; Coupe, perhaps with a liftback.

Let the various regions decide which, or both, they get.
I want a diesel wagon myself.... but would consider the hatch.

VW has the New Beetle convertible for $27k and the Eos hardtop convertible for $33k.
Ford had a coupe-convertible version of the 2nd gen European Focus (the generation we didn't get), not sure what's in the works for the new Focus (there is no 3-door hatch version for now like they've offered in the past).

There are other competitors to the Cruze in Europe that have small convertible/coupe-convertible versions as well.

I'll never understand why some people prefer 2 doors to 4 doors, but that's just me.
Not everybody has a family or cargo to shuttle around.

Some people are bachelors/bachelorettes.

Some married couples have grown children who have moved out, and want a small, personal vehicle to enjoy their golden years together on the road.

Coupes have better structural rigidity than their sedan counterparts, due to less openings on the body, which makes them marginally better at handling.

Less required cabin space allows for a sleeker, lower profile, and better aerodynamic efficiency.

That said, Chevy should add a Cruze Coupe, to replace the Cobalt Coupe. A sportwagon could be a nice addition to the lineup. The current Cruze hatch, with its awkward, chopped-off rear end proportions (reminiscent of its predecessor, known as the Suzuki Reno on the American market), probably won't go over well here. In this class, when it comes to hatchbacks, I think Americans will prefer a fastback or a sportwagon, with more space. The Sonic should serve America's two-box hatchback needs.

Leave the "hot hatch" for Buick.

in reverse order,
I really hope you're right about Somebody offering a fastback hatch since that's been my favorite bodystyle.
Tho I actually don't agree about the Reno or it's Nubira predecessors = cute imho.
The "waggiehatch" for me has been epitomized by the Mazda3...too much waggie not enough hatch;
and that seems the way most Mfgs have been going.
Tho2,
imho the Cruze's hatch is much sleeker - about half way to fastback - & I like it a lot.

Now the thing I'm dying for is a domestic dual-hatch like the Skoda Superb but in the C class!!
(and of course more fastback)
Think that might be a way of successfully bring hatches into our coming small-luxury models.

I personally like the hatch but I think the coupe would sell better. Also there is no reason for a vert. It wouldn't generate enough sales and the Cruze is to cheap to pull off a good one. You guy's are using pictures of a BMW for comparision.

it's too boring... shouldnt have either. just need a good MCE and new interiors on the cobalt coupe and hhr and let them soldier on. let the snuze continue on as GMs ford tempo.
Okay, I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there is no way any Cobalt should still be available. The Cobalt was an also ran when new. To keep it now would be a joke.

I would be willing to bet that once you get past this website, the greater car buying market would be far more receptive of a 2-door hatch as it would be to a 2-door coupe. In my eyes the coupe represents too much of a sacrifice to style.
