Chevy Cruze Two Door - Should One Be Offered - Coupe Or Hatchback?

Someone asked me this morning if I knew whether or not GM was planning a coupe for the new Chevy Cruze.

I replied that I had no idea, but that it would certainly be a candidate for strong sales if past sales were any indication.

A quick search on google turned up the photo representation below.

Question: If GM were to product a Chevy Cruze two door version - should it be a coupe or hatchback?

I say a coupe, that way Buick could potentially follow with the already developed hatchback Astra and wagon if they offer it.

Besides, the Cobalt sold many 2 door configurations, I'm surprised they are leaving this market open unless they are planning to do like the Grand Am to G6 roll out and bring the coupe out in a year or so.

I'm a hatch lover (no hatch = No Sale!)
& having suffered thru the "cheap=hatch" phase in past decades; this SOUNDS a bit backwards to me
however
now I actually would be more interested in a Buick 3-door hatch.
&but
What about the already developed Cruze 5-door? Would adding a coupe AND that be too much?
not imho

I say coupe for two reasons. First it has sold well in the past as the Cobalt. Second, since the Sonic will have the hatch a Cruze coupe will allow GM to have all the bases covered without having any overlapping models. If they did a Cruze hatch it would compete with the Sonic hatch and anyone who wanted a coupe would have to get a Civic.

I would want a five door hatchback myself. I have owned a small two door hatch before (1990 Mitsu Mirage) and a small coupe (1984 BMW 316). I liked the hatch better... by a mile.

There is a five-door hatch to be built here in Oz and the rest of the known world who like hatches, as per the Paris showcar; spy shots show the production version will be little-changed. A coupe isn't a priority although it's possible. The Astra is another kettle of fish: Mr Opel has one already, along with the hatch which I'm sure they'd be happy to provide.

Surely if an opel will be coming to showrooms in NA it'll wear a buick badge, looking at the Regal and forth coming Verano, both based off of Opels/Vauxhalls.

Just to think a Cruze convertable would be so awesome, so its for those who want great fuel economy but still have a retractable roof and leave the performance guys with the camro vert.

I say if its being a hatch make it a 5door hatch since we are loosing the HHR this year which shared the chassis with the cobalt. No way should it be a 2 door hatch if they go that route, its stepping into the size arena for Sonic and we can't have that. But if its a choice between a 2 door hatch/coupe, go the coupe. The most cobalts i see running around are coupes. And the only other compact coupe out there is basically the Civic unless theres another that doesn't even cross my mind.

As for the whole buick part, buick would do good with a small hatch off the Verano and that be its smallest car or a 3 door for those who buy golf's or rabbits or whatever VW calls them. Then they have a Regal and Regal wagon which is just a bit bigger, then a compact suv thats the same area size of an equinox. They need to seperate things bit in that area. Make the SRX the sport one and make the Terrain more tow ready in the next cycle and leave the Equinox for those who want a decently priced crossover with great mileage but not a big price tag. And make the Buick one more upscale with options like heated and cooled seats, heated sterring wheel, dual panal sunroof things along those lines, make it the upscale one.

Same deal for the Lambdas, differentiate things more, have Acadia with a Denali option but more power then the other 2, (3 if you count cadi maybe getting one) so it can tow a bit more and feel more confdent. Just give things their own style. Don't be like before with having a Chevy, Pontiac, and Saturn version of the same care and the only thing being different is grill inserts. Thats old GM and should never come back. NEVER!!!!!

I'd like to see some sort of 2-door offered. A hatch would make sense as it would be an easier sell in the European market and there are a number of other 2-door hatches on sale here (Golf, Scion tC).

A 3-door Verano would probably be quicker/easier, though; at the least, the 5-door Cruze hatch might appeal to those wanting something a little sleeker than the Cruze sedan body.

I briefly considered a Cobalt coupe before deciding to put a bit more back in my pocket at the time with something used. I've generally liked the looks, at least at introduction, of Chevrolet's compact coupes (admittedly, for that, nothing beats a '65-'69 Corvair), and a Cruze coupe would be a very handsome addition to the lineup.

Okay, I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there is no way any Cobalt should still be available. The Cobalt was an also ran when new. To keep it now would be a joke.

I would be willing to bet that once you get past this website, the greater car buying market would be far more receptive of a 2-door hatch as it would be to a 2-door coupe. In my eyes the coupe represents too much of a sacrifice to style.

Coupe

GM would be dumb not to have a Cruze Coupe in NA by mid to late 2012... I see Cobalt Coupes everywhere and they would give GM an opening to the youth market...Like others have said, A Cruze SS would be most welcome...I wouldn't mind a hatch either, but Coupe needs to be the first order of buisness...Either way I do believe Buick needs a Hatch and Coupe.

From '95 til the end of the Cavalier there was no hatch variant.

I loved my '95 Cavalier Coupe.
