i actually love this car. its not ugly, but its not a design that will set the world on fire, which is not a bad thing for most people. maybe chevy should produce an all electric volt to be the entry model, while the extended volt will be the high end model.
I think they are going to produce an all electric version of the volt. I think I'd rather the extended range version of the Volt anyway. Until the all electric can has a significantly higher range it just seems like a gimmick to me.

Not really, this is an electric car with far greater range than Volt. Sure Volt can go further without stopping because of the generator but what if you want to commute 75 miles/day without gas instead of only 30 ;) (I know GM says 40 but as the commercials say, your mileage may vary!)
LOL yea but the Nissan's mileage will vary also. Plus who wants a car when you really think about it that you cannot drive out of town? Sure you can have a second car but when you spend 30K+ it usually is not on your commuter car which is what this car really is when you think about it. The Volt is so much more of a car to me and I just could not live with the idea that I could run out of power....I remember when Houston was evacuating and people had to ideal on the freeway for over 12 hours....or when parts of the city did not have power for over a week or two. Not such a good thing with a car like this.

I agree power outages are unacceptable.
Power outages are unavoidable (unless you want to install a back-up generator... damn, this thing's getting expensive).
The car being non-functional because of one is unacceptable.

Give me one of these Leafs than that pretentious, UGLY, blobby, space-inefficient, and gimmicky Volts. Yeah the Leaf could use some front end cosmetic surgery, but that Volt has faux beltline areas, and ugly as sin rear end that just doesn't work with the rest of the car, and an interior that is designed by a child for children - it is as if the designer forgot you actually have to drive the Volt instead of having it in the living room as a game console.

Plus, knowing GM's propensity for dreadful durability issues with new technology, I'd not take a chance on the Volt for a decade. Perhaps the reason GM doesn't innovate is because when they do, they forget to build the product so that you can use it for five or six years with some reliability.

The price of the Leaf is actually reasonable without the pathetic Government redistribution of income check. You can't say that at all about the Volt which will be outrageously priced for what you get.

I hope GM takes the Leaf a little more seriously than some people here are taking it.

If the Lead is priced at $32,780, then the Volt should be less expensive.

If the Leaf is set to debut in December, 2010, then the Volt should be available in November, 2010.

If the Leaf comes with three years roadside assistance, then the Volt should come with four years.

You get the idea.

GM's Volt must make the Leaf irrelevant before it comes out. GM should take the lead in an admittedly small niche of the market before it becomes a larger one and finds itself playing catch up.

Thank God it comes standard with 3 year road side assistance. You'll be using the HELL out of that. I expect to see a LOT of hippies sitting on the side of the road when their trip to Central Market throws them over their daily allowance of miles! Of course, what is road side assistance supposed to do for them? Its not like they can bring them a gallon of GAS to get them going again. Seeing these things drug home on a flat bed is going to make my day! Hows that for saving the environment?! A 12,500 pound flatbed has to come drag you home 3 times a month!

gm should respond with creating a all electric volt. should not be too hard, just a volt without the generator. the electronics would be much simpler

Well only if you are a stupid person ;) But hippies...

They are avoidable if you had a power company that was worth a damn! I mean I have power failures maybe once in a year for an hour... only once was it out for a couple of days, that was expensive (fridge...)

Wait just a minute. 349.00 a month for a 25,000 base price lease. WTF??? And you only have the option to lease from what I've read. You mean people are going to buy a charging station for 2 grand for a vehicle their only going to lease.
Remember the EV-1, it was like 330$ a month in 1997 dollars! ;)

I think the lease aspect is to provide for battery replacement, since the capacity of the battery decreases over time rendering replacement necessary to maintain sufficient mobility. I remember Nissan talking about selling the cars outright but leasing batteries and things like that.

To me the Leaf and the Volt are not even in the same category. The Volt is a far nicer and more upscale car than the Leaf. It's technologically far superior. And I cannot believe that sane people would rather risk running the battery dry away from home in the Leaf just so they can have a 'pure electric' commute, than choose the Volt's system that includes a backup. That Volt is a car capable of getting from California to New York. How far will a Leaf go? Of course the Leaf should be cheaper. And, even if some people don't think the Leaf is ugly, I don't think anyone could think it looks better than the Volt.

Anyone who really compares this to a VOLT doesn't really get what a VOLT is, (OR for that matter what this leaf is either)

The VOLT is essentially two cars in one!

it is your all-electric commuter
and it is your backup car for those occasional long trips

Sure, the Volt might cost a little more that a leaf

But, with a Leaf you have to buy TWO CARS!

I for one cannot live without the ability to go farther than 75 miles.
Sure I regularly drive only 60 miles/day for my commute But I frequently have to make side trips to the parts store, some of our other locations, etc...

But even if you only ever drive less than 75 miles on a regular basis,

What do you do when you need to take a flight and the only convenient flight is at an airport 40 miles away?(80 miles round trip)

Or Jury duty

or The Stupid UPS regional Depot where they seem to send my boxes all the time

Or you just want to visit family

Cab rides can get expensive.

What do you do if you own the leaf?

You HAVE to own a SECOND car!

while the VOLT can do all of this.

The Leaf isn't even in the same ball park as the VOLT.

If you have a power outage in the middle of the night you're not going anywhere in this ghastly thing.
At my house this happens several times a year. Unnacceptable.
Could you let me know what state your in ad if you know if the electricity in your state is privitazed? I'm just curious for research reasons.
