VXR Vectra & Monaro Get Tougher!!!!

The Vauxhall Vectra and Monaro VXR models are already some of the most powerful cars on the road, but that hasn’t stopped Vauxhall giving them even more grunt.

New 2007 model year versions of the Vectra VXR have had the power boosted from 255PS to 280PS, thanks to a redesigned induction system, modified engine components and retuned electronic engine control software. These revisions to the 2.8-litre V6 turbo engine knock four-tenths of a second off the 0-60mph sprint time, taking it down to just 6.1 seconds for the hatchback and 6.3 seconds for the estate.

To match the engine’s extra power, Vauxhall’s engineers have also tweaked the chassis to give more dynamic handling. Modified spring and shock absorber settings and correspondingly retuned IDSPlus2 chassis control software is said to optimise the pitch, roll and turn-in characteristics to make the most of the increased performance without ruining the Vectra VXR’s impressive refinement. The difference between the normal chassis setting and the Sport setting, which is activated by the dashboard-mounted Sport Switch, has been further increased too, making sure that the Vectra’s handling can cope with the most demanding driver’s demands.

Meanwhile the Vectra’s big brother has had an even more dramatic power boost, thanks to a supercharger.

The limited-edition VXR500 is based on the standard 6.0-litre Monaro VXR, but uses forced induction to take the power from 403 to 500PS and torque up from 530Nm to a massive 677Nm. In addition to the positive displacement supercharger, the conversion also includes an upgraded fuel system, clutch revisions and bespoke engine tune.

It’s expected that the VXR500 will have a sub five second 0-60 time and a top speed in excess of 180mph, and yet it is surprisingly relaxing to drive, as most of the torque is available low down in the engine’s rev range.

This limited edition model is available for only £35,995 on-the-road. That’s less than half the price of any other coupe with 500bhp..........

Any exterior changes to these models that make them look tougher than their reg counterparts?? Pics please.

Not as long as we have a 500HP Vette

That's not how GM's playing any more. Lutz has indicated that they will allow power overlaps and Scott Settlemire has pretty much said the same thing. It did happen under previosu GM regimes, but it's apparently not the focus of Wagner. The Z06 has enough mods that its 500hp is superior to a GTO's. Besides, did you see the comparo in Motor Trend between the Z51 'Vette and the Mustang GT500? The 'Vette won and I suspect that even the base without the Z51 package would have fared well. Horsepower isn't everything.

Current Escalade has more HP than base Vette. (One current example)

I don't think GM will have to worry about the "King of the Hill", they can always put more power under the hood.
Historically there have been lots of GM models that have out powered the base vette. But historically none have outpowered the top vette. Although there was the LS6 Chevelle, but i think they offered that engine in the Corvette too.

Either way it looks like the odds of us getting a 500hp Camaro went up.

It’s nice that Vauxhall did some more tuning, but what the Vectra VXR needs is an LSD.

Limited Edition! I'll say! They went through the trouble of upgrading and souping up a car that isn't even being produced anymore!

(See: http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=18207)

I'm sure the LS2 development was worth it in a global sense, but that is a heck of a lot of money for GM Europe to pump into a car that will not be produced again, and whose replacement is still some ways away (with who-knows-what engine in it).

They did not develop it. If I am correct it was Harrop Engineering in Aust.

No LS6 in the 1970 Corvette. For 1970 the 450HP LS6 Chevelle SS was GM's top of the heap. In 1971 they pulled the 425HP LS6 from the Chevelle SS but it was available in the Vette. The only other time I can think of was 1987 with the GNX....
correct, also even if you outpowered a vette with a lesser GM model, 9 out of 10 times that "cheaper" model weighs more anyway. perfect example, the 4th gen f-bodys, same engine and tuning as comparable vettes.

i remember GM lying and stating that they had lower power because of restrictive exhaust tuning. now its well know that there was no real difference between the two. 345hp is 345hp. 35-3700lbs is not 31-3300+ lbs... all things being equal, the lighter car wins.

If am not mistaken, wasn't the 69 Camaro ZL-1 also the top horsepower car for GM in 69? Mind u less then 100 of them were made and it was almost next to impossible for the general public to get brand new. But I also agree that in today's world, it more then just hp. It is about the complete package and how it all works together. Look at how many 400hp vehicles GM has or had with in the last few years and then how many of them could touch the base Vette in performance?

Great to see these VXR models stepping up the game. With the 6.0 being Supercharged, could this be a glimpse as to what GM will do in NA?

Don't bet on it. So far, GM only has plans for the Blue Devil 'Vette & 2 of the Cadillac V-series cars being supercharged for the top preformance models. We will get more powerful naturally aspirated engines.

I got no problem with that

yes, but the great thing about factory supercharged cars is the performance upgrades, for the most part the expensive performance parts are there, all you do it upgrade the pully, computer, and exhaust/intake and you got a real monster, i.e. 3800 Supercharged, and the 2.0 Supercharged engines. I would like to see GM have a few more factory supercharged cars with a reasonable price, so we can get some serious performance without braking the bank. I would like GM to produce the next Silverado SS with a supercharged engine. That was the great thing about the SVT Lightning, throw on a few aftermarket parts and you made a already fast as hell truck even faster! Thats one reason the Lightning was such a badass truck!!!

I can't wait to see Clarkson taking the 500bhp VXR Monaro around a race track....might knock out his back again!
