Toyota Reports 2013 Scion FR-S Quality Problems To Dealers
Tundra Reports

Toyota has informed their dealers that the new Scion FR-S sports coupe has a couple of quality issues.

Toyota has issued these quality issue announcements as innocuous sounding “tech tips,” intended to help dealers get ahead of these issues before consumers have a chance to sound the alarm bells.

Tech tip S-TT-0043-12 states that some vehicles may have body panels that aren’t flush (either under- or over-flush) which are causing customers to complain. This tech tip doesn’t offer a fix, and merely states that Toyota is “looking into” the issue.

Tech tip S-TT-0042-12 states that there could be moisture built up in the rear combination lamps. Toyota is asking dealers to report any cars they have with this condition, including when the issue was discovered, how bad the problem is/was, and how the issue was addressed. Toyota is also asking dealers if the replacement lamp assembly had the same issue (suggesting a supplier QC problem).

While the moisture issue can be dismissed as relatively minor, body panel fitment issues are disconcerting. This problem should never happen in the manufacturing process.

They so wanted to be like the old GM. They seem to have it down pat. Gotta hand it to them.

"...and how the issue was addressed."

So is Toyota relying on dealers to come up with fixes to their problms these days?

Screw Toyota! I hate them! This serves them right. I am glad Karma is finally catching up with them for years of screwing the public with their lies.

I seem to remember a problem or two with the 2010 Camaro when it was first released. Customers complained and dealers were instructed to fix the issues. It's a joint effort that is in the infancy of its release, people. Go figure!

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Consumer Reports!

HAHAHAA!!!
Toyota/Scion makes more junk!!
Available now.

I don't know about everyone's "junk" reactions. All carmakers have problems - it's how they deal with them. That's where GM really fell down - customer service. It depends what toyota is going to do with this info - us it to help the customer or to battle the customer.

Well at least the cars are not running away from owners and this time its the other way around..

build quality is so poor...the owners are bitching...

(J/k) its a nice car and I'm sure the bugs will be worked out..

Whatever we say - still doesn't make a difference. Did anyone look at their sales #'s for May? Toyota was UP in sales 63% in Canada and 84% in the US. GM was up 1.3% in Canada and 10% in the US for new sales... people still are flocking to them!

That is b/c people are stupid & buy a brand of vehicle of a foreign car company that claims to be American(wrapping itself in Americana) when it is not, nor will ever be.

Honda is doing the same **** w/there Odyssey minivan.

They've both got to cut that **** out now!!!

So, Toyota, like all auto manufacturers as far as I know, tracks problems with vehicles, and now Toyota is communicating these problems to dealers. Hopefully these issues will get resolved appropriately. I don't think this is out of the ordinary (based on the limited information we have - Ed753 is correct that we need more information to know how significant these problems are).

Wow... You people make it sound like first-run vehicles from GM are all flawless.

No, what most people are trying to say is that if this was a Ford or GM vehicle the media would be all over it proclaiming it was "typical Detroit". And the Asian fanbois would be smirking about how this would never happen if it were Toyota or Honda.

Today I saw 2 new Ford Tauruses and the gaps were amazingly tight and exact and equal all around. Ford is making hundreds of thousands of Tauruses and the visible build quality is amazing. Toyota is building a few FRS's and the gaps aren't the same on either side of the car according to Toyota!

I still recall pictures from the 80s where Toyota would highlight the gaps on GM or Ford vehicles in yellow wax crayon to illustrate how much better their fit and finish was at the time. Now that their fit and finish has fallen behind Detroit and Korea we're supposed to give them a free pass? No way. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Tailight condensation... sounds like a '94 Seville!
Here's a top tip - drill some small holes in the bottom of the lense. Condensation wil go away!
No, I'm not kidding... it worked on my wife's car. Of course this should never happen in 2012.

Karma coming back to bite Toyota - Honda experiencing it. This is just delicious. Meanwhile Nissan is rocking, Hyundai, Kia, and Ford are dancing, and that rescued company with the stupid blue square just looks plain silly.

It sounds like they may have rushed the FR-S to market a little quicker than they should have.

Does anyone know if the FR-S is built at the Subaru factory along with the BRZ or does Toyota build their version in their own factory? From what I have been able to find, it seems that they are all built at Subaru however I didn't put a lot of effort into researching it.

If they are all being built by Subaru, I have to say, Toyota doesn't really deserve the blame here, Subaru does. It might also explain why Toyota is a little behind the 8 ball with regards to the fix for the issues.

It seems like both issues should be easy to correct however it sure is a shame that quality issues are already coming to light.

You guys obviously have no idea what it's like to manufacture something, or work in a dealership to repair it. I do, having once been the guy who would draft things like this (we called the Service Bulletins). EVERY company will have some kind of issue. The big thing is how do they handle it. Toyota is PROACTIVELY going out to the dealers and saying "if you see this, let us know" so they can quantify any problems and work towards solutions. This is a good process, and shows character and that they want to keep customers happy.

GM would not tell the techs, and GM would not gather the info, and GM would not come up with a fix. I know it was eons ago....but all I can remember is the paint pealing off our '86 Suburban and GM saying they had never heard of it.

" Toyota quality " is perhaps a statement not utterly divergent now from " Jumbo Shrimp ".
