The Why? behind "Chevy Runs Deep" slogan

When it comes to launching a new marketing strategy and ad campaign for Chevrolet, the gorillas in the room are Chevy's once illustrious advertising past: namely the Heartbeat of America campaign that ran from 1987 to 1994, and the "Like A Rock campaign that ran from 1991 to 2004.

Those two iconic, Hall-of-Fame caliber, indelible campaigns have made any attempt at solving Chevy's advertising problem a nightmare for every bright-eyed, ambitious advertising or marketing manager that has taken their turn at the Chevy wheel, and the ad agency that held the account until a few months ago.

A few things have changed, though, in the last 12 months at Chevrolet and parent company General Motors. And GM chief marketing officer Joel Ewanick and his hand-picked ad agency, San Francisco ad shop Goodby, Silverstein and Partners, are trying to stage a new era for Chevy starting tonight on the MLB World Series. The effort also precedes GM's initial public offering of stock in the new company in a few weeks. And the company is cognizant that many an investor will be watching the World Series.

To position Chevy for the future, GM and Goodby are not bashful about trying to tap the past. A 60-second so-called "Anthem" TV spot, voiced by Michigan-bred actor Tim (Home Improvement) Allen, draws on black-and-white footage of GM workers from the 1940s assembling vehicles, houses being built in the 1950s, a young couple in the 1960s full of hope and promise driving... then a cut to modern Chevrolets like Malibu, Cruze and Volt. The first line of the ad starts, "100 years ago..." A new theme line for Chevy, though Ewanick says it is not a "tagline," is "Chevy Runs Deep."

In all the TV spots that will break this week, including some 30-second ads meant to stir the emotional juices, Chevy is positioned as a brand that is part of the American fabric in song, culture and in most of our pasts in one way or another.
New commercials at the link.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

GM would be stupid to waste $ airing these commercials. There is less then 5 seconds of actually seeing products currently for sale, and 0 REASONS to make you want to visit a Chevy dealer.

I think that the intent of this series of ads was to build up the brand moreso than to promote the products themselves.

There are a lot of bad feelings about the remaining GM brands among a number of consumers because of:

(1) The bailout

and

(2) The shuttering of a few brands with a very dedicated following.

Overall, I thought the commercials were very good. They definitely pull at your heartstrings, unlike the earlier commercials I had watched with Tim Allen's narration (The Dear [insert car here] commercials). They also tap into that American pride that is present in most, if not all of us.

There are probably many people now that wouldn't even look at GM products because of the reasons above. Hopefully, these commercials will help to repair GM's brand in the eye of those consumers so that at least they will be willing to look to see what GM has to offer.

Overall, in my opinion, Chevrolet marketing and the ad agency hit this one out of the park.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

They can write a book about it and it still sucks.
Exactly. If you have to explain a tagline (and it IS one whether they call it that or not) then it isn't a good one. I don't hate it, but I also liked 'Born From Jets'! Still, a tagline has to be clear and simple and should should not leave any doubt as to what the manufacturer is trying to say about their product. Not sure 'Chevy Runs Deep' does that.

Oh wait, I just remembered that GM sent around an official email saying that they weren't going to refer to Chevrolet as 'Chevy' anymore!!! What happened to that?!?

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

I like it, and here's why. The first longer ad encompasses a broad view of Chevy. It's been around for a long time, and once apon a time, it was the largest brand in the Worlds largest corporation. Few people today, across all generations, dont have a memory with chevy, or have a car built by Chevy in their top 5 cars of all time. It's not designed to sell a specific car, if you noticed, all the footage in their of present day models are clips from other stand-alone commercials. It'll connect with the viewer. Memory and emotion are two powerful things. And GM uses them here perfectly. The shorter ads aren't ment to say YO BUY MY F***ING CAR!! or how bad the competition is. It's saying, you have a need, a connection, a memory, a yerning... well here it is. Do it/feel it in a Chevy. Because to alot of people and American history, the words, traditions, and feelings of Chevrolet run deep

I really like it. It has a lot of potential if they build it right.

In the article, they made a great point. If you hear about the tag "Got Milk?" without a frame of reference, it sounds silly. After building up that frame, it is one of the greatest tags of all-time. Btw, the same ad agency came up with that tag...

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

I like them. I think it shows what kind of passion and enthusiasm people have had for chevy over the years, while showing their past succeses and innovative future products. People don't get that passionate over Substandard Junk. Though the media and Toyota PR machine would have you believe that anything Chevy is junk.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

Well, I actually like them...

And here's why. Particularly beginning with the first 'Anthem' one. It's apparent that Chevrolet is going down the 'old school' Americana route and that's what they always did best. If these were the Only commercials out there I'd be worried. I think this is just the beginning though of re-establishing Chevrolet as the American Icon we remember so fondly from the 1920's,30's, 40's and especially the 50's and 60's. This is SO badly needed in the U.S. it's not even funny. The younger generation needs to know the history of this brand and what made it so great once upon a time. Because it truly represented everything that was Right with America so long ago..

Chevy Does indeed run deep. Ford can't be the only brand pulling peoples heartstrings. Chevy may have fallen from grace but there's no denying it's older legacy. That legacy can be restored with the right product and marketing.. These need to be followed up with more 'themed' commercials like that. Longer, more in depth and show comparisons of what I consider "Real Chevrolet" vehicles (pretty much everything before the end of 1972) to todays New Chevrolet. It's time to erase the past 20-30 years of crap from the history books if at all possible. When a new buying public becomes emotionally attached to Chevrolet the way my generation was, they'll be loyal provided the quality is always the best.

I'm still dying for a return to 'Like a Rock' for their trucks.. That is, Once they truly, honestly Are built that way again. If they don't ever intend to build stuff like that anymore, I'd rather they let the slogan rest in peace.

Here we go again with the ripping on GMT800 and 900's, every little chance you get you gotta get that little stab in there. It never gets old(Heavy Sarcasm). I know, I know, the best trucks were built before 1972... your a freaking broken record man. Let it go, this obsession you have can't be healthy. 20 to 30 years of crap? My 79 Blazer says otherwise and so does my 04 Colorado. What no plug for F150 this time?

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

It time to stop looking to the past and start looking forward... Most people these days have more memories of Chevy's being built like crap (a.k.a the 70's, 80's & 90's) then they do of a time and place where Chevrolet was part of the American Dream.

I hate to say it, but look to FORD... there commercials appeal to this generation and not the one that Buick is trying so desperately to get away from!

I was born in the late 1970s, obviously grew up during the 80s and 90s, and my parents always bought Chevys. I remember them them as being just plain awful, poor quality junkmobiles. Add into the equation that today (just like back then) Chevy makes embarrasingly common vehicles...that is why I will *never* buy a Chevy in my life. This ad campaign tagline (Chevy Runs Deep) does nothing for me other than bring back negative memories of a brand that put out garbage on wheels.

I agree 100%! IMO though that's exactly Why Chevrolet needs to be reintroduced like this. Time to start over from the beginning and rebuild from where 'the good stuff' left off.. Chevrolet can do future marketing like Ford does but they gotta have a solid foundation to start from again. That foundation lies in their past.. A solid re-introduction campaign will get the ball rolling in the right direction.

As their reputation stands right now, not many would take a marketing approach as Ford's very seriously coming from Chevy. GM treated Chevy as the bottom of the barrell and did serious damage to the brand. We gotta fix that and then move into the future..

I'm hoping Chevrolet really does turn into America's BMW... but with Classic American Chevrolet styling cues.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

I don't think the ad campaign will be successful. The target customer remembers the Chevrolets of their youth as overweight smog equipment choked pigs. They were born long after the historic cars of the 50s and 60s and can't relate to them. The ads need to concentrate on now and the future to attract the younger customer.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

Now that I've seen it in action, "Chevy Runs Deep" is worse than I thought. The ads were really great for the most part though. Here's my quick take on each:

1. Dogs and Pickups. That really held my attention from beginning to end. I can see that one endearing Chevy to a lot of people. The only negative, IMO, was the handicam quality footage of the new Chevy. Your average high school student has a better eye. Who shot that???

2. First Car. Not so sure about the line "it gets under your skin". I don't like things getting under my skin. Yuck. ;) But the commericial was pretty solid. Unfortuntely, if you've seen the Dogs and Pickups you're going to know it's just another Chevy commercial. It was almost as good, but kinda more of the same.

3. Coming Home. Very good. Excellent choice of music. Another home run. Except, Tim Allen phoned in his line--not his best work. Speaking of Tim Allen, I'm not sure I like the idea of him doing the Cambell's Soup ads and Chevy ads at the same time.

4. Volt: Anthem. It was alright. But if I have to watch it twice I'll die.

5.

I'm sorry you feel that way man.. It was nice of you to just pass right over all of the good things I said in my post... I appreciate that.

I re-read my post though and couldn't find where I was "ripping on gmt-800 and gmt-900" trucks though... As a matter of fact, I never even mentioned them. For the record I also have an 04 Colorado so I'm glad I'm in great company with such a nice guy as yourself. Sorry though, most buyers don't see the Colorado as one of the Chevrolet "Greats" deserving of a Chevy revival commercial campaign. Nor can I think of any other vehicles from the 80's or 90's that would fit into this.. My point on marketing "Like A Rock" is that it has to literally mean something to be used again if they chose to. Just like Cadillac's 'Standard of the World'.. It really needs to be legit to last. Sorry we disagree, no reason to be so rude to a fellow Chevy guy though.

Like a Rock was used in the 90's. I still to this day see more 88-98 C/K's on the road then I do any other body style of any other pick up manufacturer. I've beat the piss out of mine, and it still runs/looks beautifully.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

I like these....a lot! This is a branding campaign, not a "buy our friggin Malibu because of all these reasons or else" campaign.

But in the Anthem piece he talks about the "most safest". Ad agency types don't take English classes anymore?. Should either be "most safe" OR "safest".

And why so much Volt when most States don't have them for the 1st year? I get the "we have advanced technology" hook but when I see it in someone's driveway I'm heading to the dealer. What is he to say?...."Well, it got you here didn't it?" Not so great for credibility.

+1. I'm excited because it appears to be the beginning of a well thought campaign to build the brand ... not just an isolated ad.

Also, that's why the "halo" cars are featured so much: Volt, Vette, and Camaro. Appears that we will see more emphasis on these halo products for all brands. For example, the Caddy "Standard of the World" ads focus on the V-series.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

Overall, not bad. Too early to predict a "See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet" kinda impact, though.

I have to say when I was listening to the commercials, I was thinking of my first new car, which happened to be a Chevrolet. Loved it, though it certainly was pedestrian/no frills transportation. I left home for professional school with my car packed to the roof for our 23-hour trip east. To be clear, my Chevrolet was flawless in its reliability and, as a result, kept me within the GM family. Although I haven't stuck with Chevrolet completely-I still have a Chevy truck in the garage, though-Sloan would be proud; as he would have wanted, I skipped up GM's brand rungs rather quickly... but I still have great memories of my Chevy.

:lmao: i been watching that commercial on youtube along with another one dinah shore did, heck even samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) from Bewitched was in one along with a host of other stars of the 60's, they all look so fun. The old commercials were so entertaining to me. Now a days you see a commercial and i'm just like click, flip channel and then pop back to it so i don't have to see 5 mins of commercials. :D

Overall i liked all of them, only one i kinda didn't understand was the dog and truck.... but thats just me, i didn't understand it is all. Either way they look good, remind everyone once again Chevy has been in America's blood for a really long time. We were the best in the old days, and will be once again along with still having the core values they preached back then. Great work.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

anthem- good, i can see the point. gm is still trying to prove to everyone how good they are.

dogs and pickups- no. i get it, but no.

first car- no.

coming home- ok. i get it. the car is safe enough that youre willing to drive your newborn home in it.

i dunno. i do like how theyre emphasizing the vehicles- not the deals, but it feels like american revolution but a little softer and without the mushroom cloud.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

I watched them all and all I can say is what a waste of time and money. If nostalgia and touchy feely messaging is what it takes to sell Chevrolets today all I can say is that I hope it works on someone, because there's nothing in the ads that would make a jaded import buyer even consider a Chevrolet with these ads. These ads simply preach to the choir and do nothing to explain why a non-Chevrolet fan should consider Chevrolet now. These ads could have come from Ford, Buick, Dodge, anyone with a US tradition and history.

I'm an engineer by trade, so I like facts and figures. I know this sentimental stuff works on some people. It's a big fat zero on my scale.

Perhaps they are not targeting the jaded import buyer with these ads, but the customer that prefers to buy American, but because of GM's bankruptcy, looks to Ford instead of Chevrolet... There are thousands of consumers who have done this or plan to do just that when they make their next purchase... Just a thought.

I really thought that I would not like these ads. But I do. The first thing I thought of was the new Jeep campaign where they flashback to the 40's. If these commercials were the only type of ads that Chevrolet was going to air, I don't think I would have liked them as much as I did. But Chevrolet is going to continue to air commercials of individual models with a decidedly modern flair. They need to attack the market from all sides: Advertise their Modern family, "economy", power sports/muscle cars and trucks, and remind the nation of Chevrolet's strong history. The link between them all will be Tim Allen's narration.

Re: The "Why?" Behind "Chevy Runs Deep" Slogan, Five New Commercials

These ads remind of me of the original Hal Riney commercials Saturn ran when they first were launched. Those were spectacular ads and helped cement Saturn's reputation as a good, solid American car and helped create a borderline cult love of Saturns. They were low-key and sold "feeling" over product and they did their job.

Good job GM marketing team. I think you have a winner.

uh... i guess the world according to chevy does not include minorities... none in the heritage shots, none in the manufacturing or testing, and none with the family shots. Oh well, there was a hand plugging in an extension cord.

GM marketing same old fail. nothing modern or cool about this campaign at all and no connection to minorities.

Look a little closer in the "Coming Home" commercial.

Which auto commercial does connect with minorities?
