My 2010 Malibu has 134,000 miles on it. I'm perfectly happy with it. The family is expanding, so its time for a new car. I decided I want a 2016 Malibu 1LT, Nighthawk Gray, with two options: Convenience and Technology Package and Driver Confidence Package.
First, I go to the dealer I got my last Malibu from. I tell the salesman what I want. He needs to talk with his manager. (Mind you, he has worked at this dealership for over 9 years, and he does not have the authority/capability to tell me what the car will cost.) Eight days later, I get an email from him:
So I go on line. I go to chevrolet.com. I type in what I want. I see a button that says "Shop. Click. Drive." Yes, that is what I want to do. So I click it. Having shopped and clicked, I am now expecting the next screen to tell me where I can drive my gray Malibu. Instead, I get this:
Nothing.
What is offered are Malibus without the options I want and with a bunch of crap I don't, like splash guards and fabric protection.\
There is no way (on the web site) to order what I want, and I cannot see a way to expand my search to nationwide.
All I can think is that this is the most ridiculous way to buy a car. I hope Tesla breaks the entire dealer franchise system. It is idiotic. Period. It's like: give us $30,000, and we will sell you whatever we have. We don't care what you want. Imagine going into a McDonald's, ordering a Big Mac, and having the employee tell you "we can't locate a Big Mac, here is an Egg McMuffin."
Solution: (1) Can the five trim levels, (2) don't offer two shades of white, two shades of silver and two shades of dark red, and (3) make all options dealer installable. This would leave you with 7 exterior colors, 6 interior colors (3 colors, 2 materials) and three powertrains (1.5T, 2.0T, hybrid). It does not good having a gazillion choices if they are not actually available.
I have not given up yet, but I am on the Ford web site now. 2017 Fusions are in.

UPDATE: So using the cars.com lead, I contacted the dealership 2 counties away. Response:
Meanwhile, I'm just not filling the love for the Fusion. Tomorrow, I want to test drive a Mazda 6 manual transmission.
I also am giving my original dealer a second chance. I said I would consider black, and gray with just one of the options. I also said I would consider a hybrid if the price was very, very right.
We shall see...

Update #2
So I stopped by the Mazda dealer yesterday. Sure enough, there was a manual transmission Mazda 6 available for a test drive. (Yes, the car is as sporty and driver-centric as every review claims.) I come back to talk with the saleswoman...
- Price?
Chevrolet: "I have to talk with my manager."
Mazda: "All prices are listed on our web site." She tells me the actual amount the dealer earns on each sale. (Not much.)
- Incentives?
Chevrolet: "They are different for sales and leases, so we'd have to look into that."
Mazda: She opens a binder and shows me the incentive for sale and incentive for lease.
- Available colors?
Chevrolet: "We are coming up empty on gray. What are your second and third choices?"
Mazda: "We trade in a three state area. We have never had a problem."
- Navigation?
Chevrolet: Option is available only with certain packages which we may, or may not, be able to get in a color you want.
Mazda: "Comes on an SD card that we sell. Just pop it in. $300." (She might have said $399, I don't recall.)
- Closing the deal?
Chevrolet: Relative to my work schedule, there seems to be a lot of vacation days and short hours.
Mazda: Offered to stay after the dealership closed if I wanted to buy right then.
Current incentive (from the web sites, 7/24/16, 7:39 p.m.):
Chevrolet: "We Apologize, But There Are No Current Offers Available At This Time."
Mazda: "36-Month Lease. $0 Down Payment, $0 Security Deposit, $0 1st Month's Payment, $0 due at Lease Signing."
Last chance, if anyone is interested, on convincing me to get a Malibu rather than the Mazda. I really, really, want to buy American, but it feels like GM and this dealer aren't even trying.

(Mind you, he has worked at this dealership for over 9 years, and he does not have the authority/capability to tell me what the car will cost.) Eight days later, I get an email from him:
Why, no, I don't have a second and third color choice. I want a gray Malibu.
Take three: Chevy web site/shopping tools/search inventory. I get to the screen where I can filter the inventory. The problem: it does not allow me to filter by the options that actually come with the Malibu. Instead, it filters by "popular options", such as "heated seats". You can't buy just heated seats in the Malibu (at least not the 1LT). You have to get leather seats which I don't want. And nowhere in the "popular options list can I select Convenience and Technology Package and Driver Confidence Package. So I click the "popular options" that are kind of close to what I want and ask for results from "all local dealers".
Nothing.
