For an automotive journalist, nothing quite compares to the experience of stepping into a vehicle, turning the key (or in this case, pressing a button!) and experiencing it for yourself. There is a particular excitement in testing a new model. As such, taking delivery of the Steel Blue Lincoln MKT tester is a unique experience.

Most of the vehicle tests I have conducted have been on a new entrant into the marketplace, but with the chance to see in person first.
The Lincoln MKT is not yet in dealerships, so this is the first opportunity to see it in the metal. And at first glance, the Lincoln MKT doesn’t disappoint.

The MKT Concept was no doubt a high benchmark to live up to in a production vehicle. On the exterior, while the production vehicle loses some of the concept’s simplicity, it hews close to it and retains much of its character. Originally I was disappointed when I first saw the production version. It’s clear though that pictures (particularly the press photography) do not do the car justice. The MKT Concept remains my favorite, but the production MKT made the transition very well.

Personally, I would have MUCH preferred the development funds spent on the MKT to have been used for a proper D3-based Town Car successor.

That, alas, didn't happen.

I think the MKT is probably best understood as the de facto Navigator replacement.

I have yet to hear of any program to replace or update for the Navigator, perhaps unsurprisingly, given the economic collapse, unstable energy prices and the drastic new CAFE standards.

I expect it still will happen -- kind of see the MKT as preparing the way for it in fact

I agree. Lincoln needs a Mark IX. Or whatever they would call a luxury coupe with the new 3 letter thing they have going on. MIX?

Mercury should get a Cougar based off the Mustang as well. That would actually give me a reason to visit a Mercury showroom.

Wow, lots of BS being flung around in this thread.

Personally, I like it more as time has passed. It's not the best big crossover EVAR, but it's got lots of great tech., something GM needs to catch up on now.

I don't think this is ugly... odd proportions yes. I do think that it's a little too wagon-like for it to really compete with other competitors in it's class. Kudos to Ford for making an SUV really stick out of the crowd but looks clearly isn't enough anymore. I have a feeling that it won't be around for more than one generation.

not bad..just too much nostrals. theres almost no sheet metal..i mean body colored plasic bumper, on the front end, its all grill and openings. I like this better then the flex, better then the new Accord Crosstour, and Venza. What I dont understand is, why does it seem so hard for someone to design a nice looking front end for these cars? Besides the Flex, which is just a box, this car and the Venxa have very nice profiles and 3/4 views, but when you stare it in the face, its a disappointment in my eye.

Almost like seeing a gorgeous girl up ahead and trying your hardest to catch up and check behind you like your looking for someone, only to see she has no teeth and a mustache.

Well it looks hot to me. I really really like it and would choose it over anything else Lincoln makes. I would go so far as to say I would take it over a CTS Wagon outside but the CTS takes the cake with its interior.

It does look much better in the flesh, the interior is remarkable however. Nobody in Detroit has an interior as sumptuous as the MKT, especially for the rear passengers.

But I also tend to prefer a design like the Flex, especially when fully trimmed it looks more fashionable and sophisticated. But put the MKT in black and I'll take it :) The design is a bit better than the Buick Enclave, which I find to be a insipid amorphous looking blob of a design...this is also a little too curvy for the sake of being curvy.

My Aunt and Uncle have already ordered their MKT, trading in their MKX. They have the money, but I think they'll be a bit shocked by the lease rate on it ;)

If anybody is interested, I snapped some photos with my iPhone here and at the Autoshow here.

The next Lambda Escalade can't get here fast enough. The Enclave is a great contender to this (I own one, so a little bias...but just the same), however it can't compete completely with some of these features. If there were an Enclave Super, that might work against this MKT head to head, but eventhough 288 H.P. on the Enclave is pretty great, my opinion, it needs more to go up against this beast.

As for the previous comment about the Enclave's style, to each their own. These two are different in a lot of ways, the Lincoln is more of a wagon, where the Enclave sits up higher, so it's trying to look more SUV'ish

56 lbs heavier with 67 hp less kick . . .
A credible alternative to the Q7, what is wrong with you? Do you work for Ford marketing? did you come up with the commerical for the SHO showing it passing an Audi? You must make the folks at Audi smile.

Ecoboost eh? This is not new technology, GM and other manufacturers have been doing it for years and Ford goes and puts a name on it? Seriously sounds kinda like Ecotec doesn't it?

Ford is in trouble, a boring lineup and balance sheet full of debt all add up to a steaming pile of bankruptcy and man does it smell like !!!

Alternative to the Q7. Please don't make me laugh too hard.

Anyways, that photo looks good. Because you don't see the front where the grill eats little children. Or the back that is just a train wreck.

:lmao:
Wow.

Looks worse than the RL. Didn't think that was possible. Maybe someday Lincoln will become relevant.

Have to second some of the other posters - if this is the future of Ford design, a drink from the goverment teet is inevitable.
:lmao: Thank you! You can only build so many duds and then you go bankrupt.
WOW, a groupie.

You are just jealous GM has nothing that comes close. This is a credible domestic alternative to the Q7 . . .

looking forward to the full test.

Ecoboost, Ecoboost, Ecoboost . . . :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:
