Re: Review: Holden Rodeo vs Toyota's, Ford's, Mitsubishi's, Nissan's & Mazda's Ute's

looks like a nice truck, it would probably compete well with the Toyota in our market if they update it more frequently than they did with the S-10

Re: Review: Holden Rodeo vs Toyota's, Ford's, Mitsubishi's, Nissan's & Mazda's Ute's

These mid sized trucks are selling like hot-cakes in Australia now, I've been a fan of this type of vehicle for years.
They are very practical and versatile, and the girls like 'em too :D

Now that they are becoming safer and more comfortable, everyone is buying them.

This is why I believe Australia is ready for full-size pick-ups such as the Chevy Silverado and Ford F-series.
This would be the next step-up for alot of buyers of pick-ups in Australia.
Even the private importers can't keep up with the demand for American pick-up trucks.

We have companies in most states of Australia now importing full-size American trucks and converting them to right-hand-drive.

Check these state websites:-

Im not sure about the Silverado but i remember watching a review by Jeremy Clarkson where he descibed the F100 thurder(something) as THE WORST car he has ever driven. We dont need that carin Australia in my opinion.

It was a Ford Lightning with a RHD conversion. They were making a big deal out of the bits that were effected by the conversion like squeaks and such. The Lighning was an incredible vehicle (a friend is looking to buy his third) and Clarkson is a prat. It's not a light, tossable sportscar, it's a pickup truck with power, capability and looks. They are easily modifiable and can be made to suprise some of the best. With Clarkson, every American vehicle is "the worst" he's ever driven. The only favorable reviews American vehicles I've seen from Clarkson were the 1993 Ford Probe he tested in Arizona, the Ford GT and the partially favorable Hummer H2.

There are good and bad RHD conversions available. There was an Aussie on an Avalanche forum that had an Avalanche converted and he was impressed by the quality, but I can't remember the company that did his work.

I saw some Ford F-150s at the Sydney auto show a few years ago. I thought that Ford was importing them from South America somewhere. I started seeing a lot more of them on my last trip to Australia (Oct 2006), but have seen few GM and Dodge trucks (although I saw a nice H2 in Alice Springs). Note: I'm not counting any of the LHD trucks I saw that were owned by American military members.

Ford currently ships the F-250 and F-350 from South America in RHD. They used to sell 1/2-Ton F-Series pickups and Broncos in Australia too. Ford F-250s and F-350s have been used there as Ambulances for a while. I know there were some RHD GMC Sierras for Ambulance use as well in the mid-'90s.

The El Camino was a big hit in the sixties and seventies, I think those Ute's would sell very well today here in the states.

They were built as RHD versions, they were F250-F350's from Ford in in Brazil. Ford No longer imports these pickups here.

Yes they do as there is NO Demand for them. Patto has posted before about the same companies doing conversion work for people wanting a 5th wheel conversion, a smallish niche market.
Unlike the US we do have a substantial Cabover market, that caters for everything from light to Heavy Trucks.

Ambulances are now Mercedes Vans.

I liked the idea of the Ford Lightening. The problem was the execution of the idea'they were impractical: they could not tow or carry anything, but were reasonably quick in a quarter mile. Even a Holden Maloo has some practicality. That is why the Lightening died.

The Lightning could tow over 2,200kg and haul 635kg. It was the Dodge SRT-10 that had no towing capability and a mere 450kg payload.

The Lightning died because of emissions and the release of a new generation F-150.

That is unbelievable!! To think that giant waste of time had a 8 Litre V10 engine and handled like a Tank as well. What an absolute Joke!!

It also had an urban fuel economy rating of 26L/100km.

I didn't notice them at the last Sydney auto show, but then again, I had my eye on the new Holdens. However, I did notice the new Ford Ranger - very nice, too bad we can't get it here. Much nicer than the Tacoma.

Outside of the niche 5th wheeler use, NO US Pickups are imported here. Ford was the last manufacturer to import them as part of its range. Ranger from memory is a "Japanese Pickup" that is a rebadged Mazda built in Thailand.
This concept was designed by Ford Australia as possibly a new Mazda engineered, Thai built Pickup.

The Melbourne Ambulance Service still runs six F350s. They're being phased out, but the MAS is meeting some resistance from country crews, who like the grunt. The city and urban drivers prefer the Mercedes because they're more manoeuvrable and the field of vision to the rear is better.

Just imagine how well the Tundra will do, once full size pick ups get popular in Australia-what with the general loyalty that Aussies have towards Toyota, its sterling reputation for quality and the general preference for Toyota pickups over all other. As i undetrstand the Aussie is a very loyal buyer. it ain't gonna be easy for the imports to crack the dominance of the domestics in this segment.

Full Size Pickups are in no way becoming popular in Australia..they are even starting to struggle in the US.
But I can see Silverado's becoming very popular in England, the motorways especially would be a perfect place for them.

Re: Review: Holden Rodeo vs Toyota's, Ford's, Mitsubishi's, Nissan's & Mazda's Ute's

To US eyes this would seem a strange thing to do to a "El Camino" but the traditional Holden/Ford Ute does have a Cab Chassis option, now it appears only with the Ford Falcon.
