Re: Review: 2009 Pontiac GXP

GM lost money on each G8 sold at Pontiac prices. What makes you think it could be profitable as a Chevy?
.
For my curiosity...How do you know that they lost money on each G8 sold? Obviously they weren't making money hand over fist, or they would keep the vehicle...but then again...

Re: Review: 2009 Pontiac GXP

thats really uncool throughout most of it's history, pontiac has been a chevy clone. everytime chevy developed a car pontiac wanted a copy of it. the g8 should have an impala right from the start. with fleet sales the impala would have been cheaper than most prices i see guessed here. look up your gm history and you will see that it's chevy not pontiac that most development went into. the only real accomplishment pontiac can claim is the GTO and the GRAND PRIX.

Yea but recently it was PONTIAC, not Chevy, that got the cool cars. Solstice, G6 Coup/Convert, GTO, G8, etc.

Chevy is now borrowing development from other divisions...namely Saturn. Vue and Aura came first, then the Malibu and new Equinox.

Aren't those 'unique' rims from the CTS-V?

Sad to see Pontiac go. But Pontiac wasn't a real brand lately... Maybe it will resurrect later again?
They are different if you look at the spokes on the outside edge of the rim
CTS-V vs. G8 GXP

Also the CTS-V wheels are 9.5" wide in the back and 9" in front vs 8" all around for the GXP.

But you can put the CTS-V wheels on the G8 as a few on the G8 boards have done. I am not sure about the other way around.

"The big overhead valve engine’s power peaks at 4,600 rpm, while its 415 lb-ft. of torque tops out at 5,900 rpm before the 6,600 rpm redline hits."

Oops, that's actually backwards, oh well I'm too lazy to register to point it out on their site.

Otherwise seemed like a decent article.

which shows you where gm went totally wrong. chevy should have and always should be gm's shinning star. it should be the poor mans BMW,when gm abandoned this line of thinking is when it totally screwed up. chevy has always been the cadillac, the porche, the ford killer the most reliable american car around for the working class.

Thanks for the link! That does make it clear. But have to say they are still very similar...

It's funny how people assume this yet when the pontiac was killed and Holden lost its import deal, they are estimated to lose 1 billion a year...Yes I'm sure the agreement was worth money but I doubt the car was sold for a loss...

Some people will say whatever they want, but I've owned more than 20 vehicles in the 20 years I've been driving, and my new Liquid Red 6 speed manual GXP is by far the fastest, best riding, best all around car I've ever owned. And that list includes Corvettes, about 5 Camaros, a Trans Am and a Typhoon. I love it and would buy another with an Automatic for the wife if I had the money. I LOVE IT.

New CAFE rules have led to the demise of this car. Anybody that wanted this car had their chance to get one the last two years. You snooze, you loose.
Yet, if the Impala-based zeta came with the DOHC/DI 3.6L V6 as standard, it would likely get similar ratings as the Camaro (18/29 auto). That's not bad considering the lowly 3.5L with OHV is rated at 19/29. In fact, if they geared the zeta-Impala 3.6 more for economy rather than performance, it could break the 30mpg barrier, outstanding for a large sedan. And what if they used the DOHC/DI 3.0L V6 as the base engine for such a vehicle? Yes, even better fuel economy with performance likely to be similar to the non-DI 3.6L that's in the standard G8. Wow!

What's sad is that it is one of the best GM products ever, however it wasn't marketed correctly from the start and they didn't spend enough money to get the word out. Most people I know don't even know what a G8 is!
Agreed. But the general buying public does know what an Impala is. That would make all the difference in the world. As I've described above and below, this new Impala would have greater appeal than the current one, which is no longer necessary now that the Malibu is being built. The Malibu is almost the same size and far more advanced, and it meets the needs of buyers who demand FWD.

Build the zeta-based Impala and they will come:
RWD, 5/6 passenger, 6-speed automatic transmission, ABS, traction control, stability control, etc.
LS/LT - 3.0L DOHC/DI V6, 250 HP, 0-60 in 7.5 sec., 20/32 MPG
LTZ - 3.6L DOHC/DI V6, 304 HP, 0-60 in 6.5 sec., 19/30 MPG (opt. on LT)
SS - 6.2L OHV V8 w/AFM, 426 HP, 0-60 in 5.0 sec., 16/25 MPG

Most people I know don't even know what a G8 is!
Why do you think that is? G8 is a stupid, uncreative name that no one associates with a Pontiac or any car for that matter. It should have been called the Grand Prix, or maybe even the Bonneville.

Actually I think that has a lot to do with marketing - how many G8 commercials or advertisements have you seen? I've seen 1 when the G8 was first announced for the 08 model year. Other than that you never see any marketing on the G8. For such a great car it was never advertised or marketed.
