The Pontiac Grand Am has been around since 1973. The Grand Am has been through ups and downs with its ordinary customers from at least over 3 decades of life. Pontiac Grand Am has been one of the best selling cars on GM's line up which makes the Grand Am the Queen of Pontiac. The Grand Am has a new winning generation with its sucessor, Pontiac G6. The Pontiac has a little identical look of the Grand Am, but it's larger and more fashionable. The G6 has alot of exterior and interior styling that makes your taste buds holler!!!! Even tho, the Grand Am still have sweet memories to pass on to her new sucessor.

During the 70's, the Grand Am was a midsize sports economy car which sits on the GM A platform along with siblings such as her big brother, Pontiac Grand Prix. Other siblings on this platform were Pontiac LeMans, Pontiac LeMans Sport Coupe, Pontiac Cam-Am, Pontiac GTO and her cousins Buick Century, Oldsmobile Cutlass Hurst and Oldsmobile W-30. The Grand Am has a sporty motor of a V6 or V8 engines which was the most advanced motors.

The Grand Am had a short generation in the 70's. The 1st generation was from 1973-1975, and the 2nd generation was from 1978-1980. These were called 3 year runs. The Pontiac Grand Am was cancelled in 1980 and was being replaced by her sibling, Pontiac 6000 for a short period of time.

In 1985, the 3rd generation of Pontiac Grand Am came back and had replaced the Pontiac Phoenix with a new look, design, and appearence, and also was being placed on the GM N Platform as a smaller compact car which being shared by her platform cousins during this time such as the Buick Sommerset (Later known as Buick Skylark in 1986), and Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais. These cars on this platform could be known as the "GM N Platform Sisters", the reason why is because they all have the same "boxy" look. The Tech 4 engine makes the Grand Am more modern with the sound of her tone. Back in this time, the Grand Am was modern and fine looking which shares its taste of her boxy good looks from 1985-1991.

In 1992, Pontiac Grand Am began its 4th generation and was newly designed again which boost up Pontiac's line up with new styling, new interior, and newer appearence. It still shares the N platform with Buick Skylark and the new Oldsmobile Achieva (Which took place of Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais). Pontiac Grand Am was still in favor of its fashionable looks. The Quad 4 and V6 engines were available to choose from. The sales of the Grand Am has started to rise. In 1996, the Grand Am has a little minor cosmestic change which makes it look even better and cleaner.

In 1999, the 5th generation of the Pontiac Grand Am was different and more cleaner than ever with another new look, new styling, and a new appearence. This time, the Grand Am was being a twin sibling to Oldsmobile Alero (which replace Oldsmobile Achieva) which being more sporty in its class. The Grand Am has more features than it did from back then. The Ecotec engine which makes the Grand Am sound so smoother. Even tho, the cladding design which makes the Grand Am look sporty looking. In 2003, Pontiac has removed the cladding for a finer and pretty look of the Grand Am.

In 2005, the Grand Am recalls herself to retirement and she enjoyed success as a compact car filling a niche as a comfortable, affordable, reliable, yet sporty car during its lifetime. She was being replaced by Pontiac G6 which makes it the 6th generation of the Pontiac Grand Am in 2006.

Now......Even tho I'm a huge fan of a Grand Am every since 1991. Her memories will pass on even tho she's retired. I think the Pontiac G6 will make a huge difference with costumers just like the Grand Am has. Now even tho...the G6 came in production at a large rate when Oprah Winfrey gave away about 276 cars to her audience. So this means that the Grand Am has alot of difference with her newer generation. The Grand Am competes with the Toyota Camry (America's Best Selling Car), Honda Accord, and other best selling cars. Grand Am was only Pontiac's Best Selling Car in all times throughout her lifetime. So...she made alot of effort into making her customers very satisfied. Even tho....Grand Ams can be very compatible with other smaller cars such as Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Oldsmobile Alero, or Chevrolet Cobalt. These can be defined as "female cars. Pontiac Grand Am has been the "Driving Excitement" for the past decades, so that's why you will see these cars driving anywhere, from one block to another one.

Pontiac G6 has its own positively mind and attitude like the Grand Am had, but it's more virtual and more sophisticated. So I'm very proud that Grand Am has made a huge sucess during the past and now it's time for the G6 to do the same process like her retired sister has done. In fact, G6 has followed the steps to be another new Grand Am and the good thing about it is Pontiac G6 is the top best selling car for Pontiac. So these 2 unique cars will make Pontiac more excitement in the automaking industry of GM!!!!:)

Well I'm just letting yall know....Even tho...I don't care about what you all say about a Grand Am or G6...it's your opinion on what to say. I take that back, you all can say or have negative or positive reactions about a Grand Am or G6. Let me hear about your comments, if I don't like them....then there's nothing I can say or do about it. Go ahead, say what you feel about these 2 unique cars on Pontiac's line up. Remember...it's your opinion!!!!

Hmm...
I've always liked the Grand Am... especially the boxy version with the Quad 4 HO in the Mid 80's... white... with the white rims.
(The look worked on Bonnville as well).

I have a White G6. It's a decent commuter car. But don't expect European performance or handling because the closer you get to the limit, the less composed the car becomes. HOwever, at slower speeds it's got better than average handling and ride. Too bad about the turning radius. It makes my old SL2's turning radius feel huge in comparison.

I'll apologize about the bad reaction that I had made to defend these two cars the other time, so I'll learned from my mistakes. If you all have something positive to say...then go right ahead....if you have something negative to say....then it's best for you to explain why the fact you don't like the Grand Am or the G6 in other words...from 5 out of 10 of you have some contracted reactions on a Grand Am than you do the G6 in which I understand now...but that doesn't mean I'm gonna hate the Grand Am because some of you hate it.:)

I like and appreciate your enthusiasm, but first bolded statement:

NO KIDDING LOL...:rotf:

and the second thing I bolded...

NO YOU ARE WRONG, THE FIREBIRD, FIREBIRD FORMULA, AND FIRBIRD TRANS AM WERE PONTIAC'S BEST SELLING CARS FROM 76-81, fyi.

as far as the G/A, I like the ones with the door handles on the windows, that body style always appealed to me (even though the handles froze like ice in the winters) and the 99ish model where the back end wasn't bigger than Texas, I liked that model too, very contemporary.

I wouldn't call her the queen of pontiac, the best pontiac's were hands down over the years the GTO and Trans Am. A SMALL case could be made for the 89' Fiero's (the only year they got them right, then killed them:rolleyes: ).

As far as the G6, I like how the tranny holds the gear and won't lock out your decision making. The car has WAY to high of a roofline, the back end looks like a neon, it needs bigger headlamps up front, bigger foglamps as the up option, smaller ones standard. I like the rim packages offered minus the aluminum 16in.ers I can't stand these, they look SOOOO bad...
Image

the interior needs dual zone climate control, better soft touch materials all around, elimination of the wood, more metallic / chrome trim all around. Look at almost any mazda or nissan interior and ANY exterior, that should be how pontiacs are as well as different powertrains taht have more power than their corporate cousins erg! ...but its GM ... . Also, the interior should be "integrated" not a parts bin slab in a radio in taht there spot...lol. Sad, yes, better than the Grand Am, MOST DEFINITELY, segment leading, fix those issues and offer a six speed auto standard, then we will talk;) .

Thanks for your expression of your comments...maybe in the future..the GM Might try its best to inprove the G6 as they had done with the Grand Am when it was still in production...Now from back in your comment, The GTO, Firebird, and Grand Prix was among the Grand Am to be best selling cars of Pontiac back then...but over the years since Grand Am has been steady growing in production, the Grand Am has took over the best selling position when it became very popular back in the mid 80's until now. Trans Am, GTO, Firebird, and Grand Prix is some good looking cars, even tho they do still exist on production. Now Grand Prix came bolder and more aggressive looking back in 2004 with extreme interior and exterior looks. That's what you call a Pontiac driving excitment......A GTO can be like a mini Grand Am by the way the front end looks, but it's real sporty for the road. A firebird sure can lit up the streets at day and night...it can be like a mustang, a corvette, or a camaro, but they don't make them in production anymore...if they were...it might become one of Pontiac's Best Car in it's class.....Now why they chose Grand Am as the Best Selling Car is because its sales are competed with Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. More People buying a Grand Am than any other Pontiac...But I'm not saying that a Grand Am is the best car among other cars...its just...Pontiac has put it in the catergory and made the Grand Am look good and calls her the Queen of Pontiac from 1985-2006....Now the G6 which is today's Pontiac's Best Selling Car..it's gonna spruce up some more in the years to come...Even tho there's more new generations of Pontiacs coming such as the G4, G5, and G8.....these are based on newer generations of older cars such as the Grand Prix, GTO etc.:yup: :yup: :yup: :yup:

As of the latest information available, the G6 is in the top ten of fleet sales....meaning it's Pontiac's best seller because of rental car companies, government bodies, and corporate fleets, not because of individual buyers. Which means the G6 took up where the Grand Am left off, as a rental queen.

I actually found it to be a very informative history on the Grand Am. So thanks chrisgraydon!

...and come on guys, I don't know or remember anything about chrisgraydon, but can we please stop the drama recap on this guys history and stick to the thread topic.

I drove my friend's 2001 Grand Am GT around for a week. Awful, lead steering and the fuses for the windows were blown. 3.4L motor is an anchor. I'm glad the G6 replaced that heap.

Well I was trying netcast this information to people so they can realize of what the Pontiac cars were all about...But some of you all know alot than I do about Pontiac and its cars. But I'm just stucked on its main source of vehicle of all times during the mid 80's to the mid 2000's. Eventually, I'm trying to let people reach out on their comments and explanations about how they feel about the Grand Am or G6 or any other Pontiac brand car.

Thanks so much for your comment....I'm just trying to see what others think about a Grand Am or G6 even tho..they are 2 of a kind. Most people on here are tired of me bringing up the Grand Am, even tho it's history now....but it's memories will be passed on to the G6. The Grand Am is the car that is part of the Pontiac history like any other Pontiacs. They rumors are not trying to visualize that. Even tho...many critics are not please with a Grand Am like any other important customer is. There are 5 out of 10 people dissed the Grand Ams more than any other brand I know so far. Even tho I don't see nothing wrong with a Grand Am...it's just like any other car, and people don't see what has the Grand Am had went through in the past....every other car has ups and downs, but I hear people blaming everything on a Grand Am, but I'm just hearing everyone's comments and explanations about their experience with a Grand Am. Even tho, this doesn't mean they can ditch out a G6 like they done a Grand Am. Even tho the Grand Am has retired and has settle down. So the G6 has tooken place of where the Grand Am has left off. That's what I said, the G6 has become the Best Selling Car and the New Queen of Pontiac during this generation of the Grand Am.

I doubt I'll ever really appreciate the GA very much. To me it has a stygma of rental/grocery-getter. It was fantastic at that, but that's not all I want out of a car.

I will say that the G6 is a much more attractive car. It's more powerful and handles decently. I didn't realize there were 5 gens of the GA. The new name makes a lot of sense now.

In 1985, the 3rd generation of Pontiac Grand Am came back

In 1992, Pontiac Grand Am began its 4th generation

Thanks for the history lesson. But this leaves me confused. You say the Pontiac 6000 replaced the Grand Am...however you don't call it the 3rd generation, yet you say the G6 replaced the Grand Am thus making IT the next generation. If you claim that the G6 is the next generation of Grand Am, then it would follow that the 6000 was also a next generation. Thereby the G6 would be the 7th generation of Grand Am.

Either that or it's an entirely new vehicle that shouldn't be burdened with the Grand Am's history.

Oh, anyone else notice that the Grand Am has 6 letters after the G in its name?? G6. Maybe it is a Grand Am after all. Shocking:faint:

Yes there are 5 generations of a Grand Am....the early part of the Grand Am's life has 2 generations that was split up to 3 years apart from 1973-1975 and 1978-1980 which were cancelled in 1980. Then the Grand Am came back with permanent generations back in 1985 until 2006...there are 3 other generations has lasted during that time. Some people don't realize that the Grand Am has come way too far during its career in the production business.

Not to offend that Grand Ams was really made for women since the car has alot of feminine looks, it can be compared to a Sunfire, Cavalier, Alero, Accord, Camry, or Malibu since all females love these type of cars. But you will see a few men driving these type of compact cars. But you see.....a Grand Am is like a type of girl car in which they be banging on the streets and cruising around neighborhoods. Since the G6 came out...they are really tuning up the highways with these cars!!!!

I know it sounds very confusing tho....The Pontiac 6000 has replaced the Grand Am for a temporary cancellation during that time....but that don't mean that the Pontiac 6000 is a generation of the Grand Am. Not to mention that The Grand Am came back in 1985 when it replaced the Pontiac Phoenix. Even tho..it's like a back to back generation of the Grand Am, but Pontiac hasn't name the Pontiac 6000 the 3rd genration of the Grand Am. I guess that They had make the Pontiac 6000 the substitute to the Grand Am which rested from 1981-1984.. When 1985 came...that's when the Grand Am came back to the production line to replace the smaller car, Pontiac Phoenix...even tho the Grand Am became a very smaller compact car and was removed from the GM A platform to the newer GM N platform in which the Grand Am was a larger midsize car from the early 70's to the early 80's.

Well....I'm trying to speak the truth about how the Grand Am become so popular during her career in the Pontiac line up production. It really pays off to have a unique car like a Grand Am...the G6 really makes you wanna be "Crazy in Love" with it. Some people are desparate and buck wild to get their hands on a G6 as they would of have done with a Grand Am. ;)
