regfootball, thanks for sharing this "pre-embargo" road test summary of NG Cruze.

I'm tempted to test drive a Cruze 1LT with 6-speed manual now. ;)
no problem! my current ride is a stick, and i can't wait either. However, being in a lot of traffic again, I'll probably go with the automatic.

a couple other notes......their is no crowding in the lineup for Chevy cars now. None of them encroaches on the other's territory. I've driven the Malibu 3 times now and it has a healthy size advantage over the Cruze, likewise the Impala is still more deluxe than the Malibu. The Cruze LT is actually faster to my seat of the pants than the 1.5 Malibu LT (which I believe now after 2x drive is underpowered, you must get the 2.0). Current Cruze moves out ok but is a bit of a buzz bomb....NONE of that in the new one and its probably faster. .......Second, the car would be fantastic as a diesel....hope they still put the whisper diesel in it, and I believe they will...50mpg should be no problem with it. Third, the car is a bit less American and youthful in its styling than its predecessor. It sort of implements a bit of an Asian look as well as sort of being a last gen Civic mock (while the Civic becomes larger and more brash / American itself). I think the hatchback will help bring the sizzle back to this new body when it comes out. Fourth, it sort of upset me the LT didn't have leather wrap wheel. Even the RS pkg LT i saw on line didn't have one. That's a serious omission IMO. But if that is my biggest nitpick on the Cruze....the interior of the Cruze is actually a more conservative design than the Malibu's but it really looks handsome and well laid out and to me has better interior plastics and overall than the Malibu. The Malibu's popping iPad thing is a bit gimmicky. The Cruze's dash looks tasteful and it is not ****pit style like the current one....but it will compare very well to those shopping all the other Asian competition because it looks better. Cruze shares some gauges and switches with the Malibu and so it still looks $$$$ Last passing thought, they should make a 1.8t upgrade for an up level Cruze

The answer's simple: Cruz doesn't sell on reviews. It's buyers aren't all that interested in what we car freaks are interested in. They buy Cruzes because they're Chevy buyers, and they want cars of Cruz's size. Or because they like their friends' and relatives' Cruzes. But not because Road & Track liked its handling balance.

Will this offer solid competition for the Civic ? My two cents says no , Honda's engines are legendary , plus they went a bit more vertical on the windshield by arching it , so it appears . The greenhouse is more open and they didn't lower the roofline . I think the new Cruze has the more GM trendy severely sloped windshield which results in it losing an inch of headroom...so I take it that the seating position is lower . This is going to lose them sales , in my opinion , as it is no longer a distinct excellent design with a greenhouse offering excellent visibility......it now looks just like any of the Korean , Japanese imports and has lost it's uniqueness !

The new Cruze is an excellent product and will go from strength to strength building on the already solid sales foundation.

The reason we haven't see as much press on the new Cruze is because the new Malibu needs that time to change mindset, Impala and Cruze sales will continue strongly while focusing more on the Malibu will do good things too.

I was at the local Chevy dealer the other day (freebie oil change for the Sonic)...they have NOT received any new Cruze. There was one new Malibu. Looked great, but for me I would definitely want a car in the Cruze size range. Looking forward to reviews etc.

Yep cause windshield angle is the only thing that sells cars. :lmao:

It is very odd. Maybe national reviews have been "embargoed" somehow, but I don't even see any local paper reviews.

The local Chevy dealers near me only have a couple of new ones. I am very impressed with it. That is really a very nice looking car.

Still odd considering they are already on lots.

Did GM not expect production to start as quickly as it did?
SOP is a little fuzzy, but Lordstown was basically down about 10 weeks............

That is longer than Dearborn was down when they completely re-tooled the plant for the aluminum F150, so I don't think production was ahead of schedule.

Better yet, where are the "Here's your 2017 (BRAND NAME) Lineup" pages? The GM Order Guide is up and running with many of the 2017s?
Outside of the "5 new Chevrolet's in 2015" Marketing Campaign, I really question why this car wasn't just called a 2017 from the get-go; even if change-over went absolutely flawless, they wouldn't have been building NG Cruze's until Late January.

When I first read this, I thought you asked " Where are the new Cruzes?" I was going to say that they are at Lordstown, wrapped around the factory. There were easily over 1000 parked there. While I was there inspecting equipment at the site, I was told they were preparing for a showing. It was the first time I had seen them in person. I thought they looked nice. I liked that they didn't have the cheap looking steel rims with a pseudo rim cover like on the Cruze Limited. I also got the impression that sales for the Cruze(s) had slumped and that a reduction in manpower was possible at the Plant.

I was thinking the same, where are the reviews.

I haven't driven though the lot of a Chevy dealer in a long time, but I drove through one Monday, in a very rural area of Upstate NY. They had a handful of Cruzes there already on the lot and ready to sell.

I figured if this small Chevy Dealership in a rural area has a few, then they must be out all over. It was THEN that I pulled out the smartphone and looked for some reviews..and found nothing.

Media Embargo? Isn't the conspiracy theory of a lackluster product more fun?

I'm not worried about the new Cruze. The first gen was very competitive and this new one will be better in every way. GM knows a thing or two about proper engineering. Heck, they are even making their cars lighter now! Maybe they are taking a slow roll-out approach and doing the engineering before deliveries now!

I know most of us have hardly even saw a new 2016 Cruze yet, but might as well get this out of the way; these colors are being discontinued for 2017.

(obviously these decisions were not based on sales and/or customer interest)

(GXH) Blue Ray Metallic exterior color

Perhaps the plan is:

Release to the media on April the 19th. Start the flow of glowing reviews on the 20th; continue to build the media buzz around the vehicle.

This time, though, actually have vehicles in dealerships ready to go that people can test drive and buy - so no more months of waiting between the media buzz and people being able to touch and drive them.

Will be fascinating to see if the strategy works.

Smart move....really smart move.

Somebody somewhere has ( really ) been payin' attention.

This is the new ( millennial oriented ) thing or one of then..... for when you think you have what you need to nail the best of the best within the intended target market.

Notice also, how truly dated the negative advertorial snark in the source articles comes across as.

Sometimes...... you just bypass the Island.

Not a good thing for spin docs though.

Excellent
WTF you talkin about?

The Civic's roofline is lower, it feels more squashed down on than in the new Cruze. First hand experience, the new Civic is a low rider.

Visibility is pretty good out of both.

New Cruze looks like a winner.
BUT the new Prius is breaking new ground. Ed Wallace, the auto guru in the north Texas area has a Friday morning segment on a Dallas news station (as well as a radio talk show on Saturdays). ANYWAY he is reviewing a Prius and said this morning he drove it 50 miles to work at posted speeds and averaged 115.5 MPG and put the camera on the gauges where the MPG read out proved it. Seems unbelievable. PLUS the model he had stickered at less than $25K. Needless to say he was flabbergasted and went on and on about it. Assuming all this is factual, Cruse has a huge challenge, never mind the Volt.

+1. This is indeed strange. We had reviews on the new Malibu months before the launch...and not a word on the (more important, in my opinion), new generation Cruze...and it's been two weeks since the article above was posted. I can not recall anything like this.

Update:

My local dealer has 34 in stock and 19 more in transit. Most are base "LS" models which is interesting for a new model introduction.

.
Perhaps Chevy is not not going to make the same mistake with the NG Cruze that they made with the Cavalier, or Chrysler with the K Car and Pacifica: loaded models that created sticker shock for the potential buyers.

The local Chevy dealer had five Cobalts in Dec 04 and all of them were loaded to the gills with options. I know they were Chevy's "Premium Small Car", but the price was jacked up beyond all recognition.

It's why I bought an ION: same drivetrain, engine and platform, but I had far more choice, including color and option levels. All the Cobalts were black or white. Row upon row of trucks, though.
