New Chevy HHR hits home run

The 2006 Chevrolet HHR is what the future used to look like, an artist's rendering that blends memory and imagination.

From its optional chrome roof rack to the sculpted metal housings for its round afterburner taillights, the HHR reminds me of 1940s and '50s drawings of spaceships and cars of the future.

Some skeptics have already dismissed the throwback look of the HHR as Chevy's belated answer to Chrysler's retro-styled PT Cruiser, but the compact wagon is more than that.

Both cars use their brands' heritage effectively, but while the HHR -- which stands for Heritage High Roof -- borrows key styling cues from models such as the 1949 Chevy Suburban, it's not just a slavish exercise in playing the oldies.

The HHR has been on the auto-show circuit as a concept for a while, and it just went on sale with remarkably little fanfare for a car that signals a seismic shift in how America's best-selling brand thinks of small cars.

Finally, someone who recongizes that GM interiors have improved!!!
I saw one today in Annapolis MD. Black exterior looked sharp, much better in person than in photos. Proportions are spot on and better than the PT...BUT the interior was shockingly low quality. Grey cloth looked and felt cheap, the hard dash was ok but the door panels were particulary low grade looking. And its true, the hole for the door locks is just a hole crudely drilled in the plastic!! Even at this price point GM can't expect good reviews on the interior. And the driver's door seal was misaligned - but out the factory it went.

Oh, and the owner was in his late 50's early 60's - all grey hair.

I like the HHR, but let's be realistic . . .it IS primarily a 4-year-late competitor to the PT. Now if Chevy came out with something that looked like an HHR but was rear wheel drive and was bigger than a Blazer but smaller than a Suburban (think of a stretched, 4-door "SUV" version of an SSR), V6 engine, with V8 option, priced between $30K and $39K, THEN we'd have something really different and an even bigger hit, IMO.

30-39K is too much, people with familys have a hard time justifying that much of an expence (hell, my girlfriend and I combined couldent afford the payments on that, plus insurance, let along an actuall family of 4..) a lower priced SUV type vehichle with good fuel econmy and styling, at an afordable price will be much better to the brand as a whole. Also remember, the impressions that kids get now when they are young will be kept as they grow up, say your kid is 14, you get the HHR, he notices that its preaty nice, in two years he'll be driving, chances are he's going to want a cobalt, and by that time they should be on the used lots for under 10 grand, wich he could then start saving up for with a part time job, and get one with a cosigned loan or somthing, as he gets older, and has a family of his own, he moves to an impala, or his own HHR or even a Trailblazer or Tahoe... kids are who GM should be impressing....

I saw one of these at the local Chev Dealership, in Amythist.. I abhor the color, but the wife liked it.. in fact, she liked the car enough to suggest that we get one next time around. Surprising, since i have been trying to get her ass outta the big sedan market for years. She liked the interior, and the room in the 'way back' for the two dogs. Hell, if SHE likes it, I may take TWO!

Normally she wants a Volvo S60, or a Lincoln LS, or the Pontiac GP (we own this one) or the Taurus SHO (own one).. and she WAS talking about an SUV like the Envoy.

I liked what I saw. I guess the one i saw was a Wednesday build, cause all the fit/finish parts looked good to me. Now, about that color.. If only the Dark Cherry Red from the Pontiac GXP was available... hot rod possibilities abound!

Speaking of TWO ... I have a Sport Red HHR and the wife has ordered an Orange Sunburst HHR ... :)

It looks expensive, i however don't think it is too much chrome. But i did notice there was an abundence of chrome. The grill stands out from pretty far distances.
Can there really be too much chrome? Remember as the saying goes "if it ain't chrome....go home!" But seriously, if you see this vehicle in black with chrome wheels, door handles, mirror caps, and grille it looks bad-a$$. And it is retro...when chrome was king.

Easy. Same wheelbase but without the trunk sticking out behind the rear wheels.
It doesn't make much sense to build a vehicle that's made for hauling cargo, and making it shorter than the car it's based on. It would blow away the PT's cargo room with the bench removed if they'd extended that rear a little bit.
