The new Sport Trac comes for the first time with a V-8 engine – the same 3-valve, 4.6-liter used in the new Mustang. The V-8 delivers 292 horsepower. In addition to SUV capability, the Sport Trac’s innovative pickup bed offers three in-box storage bins with drain plugs. The vehicle’s frame is 444 percent stiffer than the previous model and adds four-wheel independent suspension for more refined ride and handling. The new Sport Trac goes on sale in the first quarter of 2006.

Not bad, but Ford can do better. Set those designers loose.

Not to be the contrarian, but the lines look nearly identical to the previous model.....
I would have hoped for something more differentiated.
The Image of low-sales Freestar versus nearly identical twin Windstar is etched in memory.

Wow 444% stiffer...and the media was surprised with the Cayman's 200%.
considering the old platform was prone to rollovers and such, and was so outdated, its still impressive.

Now cut off the other two doors and make an updated Ranger. The current ranger is STILL based on the same chassis that the old Sporttrack and Explorer were. I mean, I'm a big fan of my Colorado, but let's face it Ford could leapfrog everyone here and have the most refined small pickup just by finishing the chop job that made the Explorer into the Sporttrack. They'd have the four wheel independent suspension that only Honda's Ridgeline has, but also an available V-8. I bet you could make a regular cab Ranger version handle so as to put a Toyota X-runner on a trailer with its tailgate between its legs.

After owning 18 new GM cars, I purchased a new 2004 Sport Trac. It has been a wonderfully reliable and useful vehicle. I like the the fact that Ford kept the same basic design and have made a V-8 available. The horsecollar grill may be enough to keep me from buying one, though I doubt it.

I like the vehicle. It's a MUCH better dynamic effort than anything currently in the midsize class. It offers options and things the others do not. :)

Still, the styling is so evolutionary. NOT revolutionary. An adrenaline version AND 4-Trac (sold soon in Asia) will do wonders for the pedestrian body styling. ;)

ford and GM's press release pics never do their cars justice. Check out Chevrolet's website. Pathetic.

I still am not wild about the Tahoe, but in car and Driver magazine, with a different photographer and a real background, the car looks sharp.

This sport trac looks a bit bland in that pic, but I saw some around here a while back that looks great. I am impressed with this new truck.

Obviously, there will be vast improvements in the chassis integrity of this vehicle over the prior one as it was based on the explorer of two generations prior. Even the last generation explorer was world apart from the sport trac. This will be a nice truck, that's for sure. But I find myself asking ford why they dont integrate the cab and bed since it's basically an explorer. As someone else noted, this would make a fantastic small pick-up, MARKET-LEADING in fact! Refinement of fridgeline, more rugget than a frontier. I can see it now
