My biggest fear of the EV is already starting.

I knew the fun police were going to try and ruin the electric car because it’s so easy to implement in an EV.

i honestly didn’t think it would happen this soon. I always thought it would take a couple of high speed accidents and the ensuing fireball would be used to garner support to keep us all safe.

Already in the garage. And by old I am talking 2016 with a nice big V8.
Remember when the 700 Club was railing against/running down the rise of the "EU" 30 plus years ago; talking about how nothing good would come from them (the EU), but austerity and totalitarianism....

I laughed at the 700 Club, as did a lot of other people....These days I'm not finding the 700 Club so funny with stories like these coming out about what the EU is proposing to do or has done.
I'm afraid the EU is just showing us a precursor of what will happen everywhere unfortunately. A couple of high speed crashes with a wicked fire and the People Against Fast Cars or the like will show up and want answers.

At that point makes them cubes with no windows and couches right along with full autonomy to keep us al safe.

Because you have it installed it does not prevent you from overriding it, you can still override it after it resets it self every time you turn the ignition off, or you can still disable override it by touching the accelerator pedal.

In addition to the fitment of speed limiting systems, the European Parliament wants all new cars equipped with technology to monitor driver drowsiness and how distracted they are, as well as other safety tech, such as reversing assistance, lane-keep assist and a data logger.

A data-logging system will capture and record what the car is doing up to and during crashes, and will help determine what caused the accident.

Under new UK law (Coming into force in July this month for speed limiters) If you disable the speed limiter, you automatically disable your car insurance cover as well. So if you were over the speed limit have an accident, you will be held accountable liable to pay for all damages out of your own pocket whether the accident was your fault or not, insurance companies will check out your data-logger to see what mode your speed limiter was in at the time of the accident.

Wow, a reason to actually appreciate my stage of life, and that I'm not looking at a life-long future of being spied-upon and 'disabled for the good of others'.

I need to find a real nice mid-'60s full-size and have it retro-modded with some upgrades, but gleefully thumbing it's nose at modern stuff trying to communicate with it / the satellites trying to get a bead on it.

I don't see this as an electric vehicle thing, I'm sure the same can be done to an ICE powered vehicle.... Both of my cars already know what the speed limit is on the road and display it. The Volvo annoyingly flashes the speed limit when you exceed it, but at least it is a small visual flashing away on the dash. Just a little software programming away from limiting my ICE vehicles speed on a given road.

You are absolutely correct. It never ceases to amaze me how people can get all worked up over the nefarious potential for technology that has been in cars--possibly the cars that they own--for a decade or more. The following is an ABC News TV report about a 2009 demonstration of technology that allows the police to stop your vehicle:

No EVs involved.

Without approving this measure I can understand it.

Europeans must reduce oil imports. This is a big vulnerability for them as demonstrated by the blackmail of the Russians. Reducing gears reduces fuel consumption. The USA did the same thing during the 1973 oil crisis. Even if this reduction in consumption is only one or two percent it helps a little.

Speed control also reduces accidents and the severity of injuries. COVID and its long-term effects are overloading health systems everywhere. Each injury injury avoided frees up a bed in hospitals.

Finally the environmental crisis. I know that many here refuse to believe that there is global warming and even if they believe in it they refuse to make the link with fuel consumption. That's correct and I don't want to argue about it here. The majority of citizens in Europe want their government to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reducing speeds is an easy way to achieve this.

Speed limiters have been in cars for decades

My last recollection of a speed limiter in an ordinary Ford Falcon was the mid 1990's

It was there to protect the drivetrain

but yeah tell me again how all these speed limiters on new fangled electrics are there for "government control "

They had speed limiters to protect drivetrains here in the 80's, these new ones are more about saving road deaths, and adding other tech that can introduced to replace old ICE/VAT taxes they will lose out on, when EV's go mainstream.

A lot of what is going into cars here is to ensure that when the ICE is banned in the future the 70% tankful of tax on every fill-up with gasoline the the billions in fuel duty/VAT revenue Governments collect won't be lost as EV's pay no fuel duty will end up with EV data loggers in the future will be to introduce $2 a mile road pricing on all electric cars, so they don't lose out on the billions of tax revenue they use to collect on ICE fuel duty/VAT. It basically changes from a fossil fuel consumption/VAT tax on ICE cars to road milage road pricing tax on EV's as ICE cars are phased out, So the Government does lose out on old ICE revenues.

What I'm going to attempt to do is find a couple of cars to test drive, I haven't been speaking to car salesmen for 2+ years now (surprise!) but there are a few hybrids I'd like to test drive.
I may also get an opportunity to review a very unique vehicle.
No, not the ones I already have. They're Fords.
But I need a few stars to align first,

Only a matter of time.

“On a similar note, he said that the regulator is holding talks with automakers and safety advocates about a potential demo program for autonomous vehicles to help “us better understand how safety would be evaluated in determining whether it’s appropriate to pull a human driver from the vehicle itself in widespread deployment.”

“NHTSA is moving to kick off “a lot of rulemakings related to automation” with an aggressive new push to get regulations out surrounding autonomous vehicles.”

88 posts.

That's how many I just had to delete.

I don't have the time or energy to monitor every thread on this site. I trust that the majority of you are adults and are capable of self-control, but apparently I was wrong.

If anything like this ****show of a thread happens again, I don't care if you've been on this site 20+ years, you WILL be banned. Some of you have gotten away with far too much for far too long at this point.
