The question may arise as to why Merc would rename the car after the E-Class when it's based on another. Ernst Lieb, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA says one of the answers is that the car performs better for its intended purposes with C-Class underpinnings than it would with E-Class architecture. But more telling a reason is that customers will be far more willing to fork out more money for something called an E-Class Coupe rather than one called a C-Class Coupe, especially at the higher end where the margins are bigger.

This makes no sense.

Yes, the E-coupe is based off the C-sedan with pretty much as much of the E-sedan underpinnings they could use. Mercedes was not about to develop a second version of the E-classes platform when they already had an existing platform the size that they needed.

Its no different than the CLKs of the past.

I see Merc PR corrected the honesty of an executive making an unapproved statement.

The link doesn't actually state the E coupe is not based on the C rather the E coupe has 60% content from the sedan. Sounds like spin to justify the higher MSRP.
I could care less either way as they are both excellent cars built on a Merc-exclusive platform. The E Coupe is larger and offers more powerful drivetrains as well as more tech options than the C Coupe.

You made a lot of posts for not caring.

Merc exclusive platform just like the current Grand Cherokee. ;)

If a car is more expensive such as E to C it should offer more features and a more powerful engine options.

Go ahead and prove me wrong then. You're yet to make an adequate defence, so you've had to resort to one-liners.
I disagree with you get over it. Merc is moving down market. The entry level C coupe is powered by a 4 banger with 201 HP. Very exclusive and premium.

I would have to agree with varient on this one. With the economy and fuel prices the way they are everyone is focusing on smaller less powerful cars more than they have in a long time and the luxury brands are no different. Remember BMW is even going with FWD for their smaller cars. Cadillac will offer a 4 cylinder in the ATS and will eventually do a city car.

You have to adapt and adjust to the marketplace or you die.

Cadillac's similarly-priced mid-size SRX crossover has a V6 that can't muster the torque of the compact C Coupe's base 4-cyl., that's what you should be worried about.
