Local NBC News affiliate had the story of the recall on the 11 pm news tonight. I haven't been able to find a video or text link yet.

Yes. Affects 2005 to 2010 models.

Not nessesarily true.
Just because there's complaints at the jump doesn't mean you should recall right away, nor does it mean they "waited" on anything.

Track the problem down, try and sort out problems with supply or design, wait for things to improve - and then see that the data and failures aren't getting any better. It's not like every car they produced had a failed unit. And they ended up replacing many of these under warranty. Unfortunately, it seems like it didn't get any better, hence recall.

You don't OMFG A PROBLEM, RECALL ALL OF THEM...

one of the worst possible times to have a big recall!

Silverado frames are not rusting out (Tundras are). Colorado frames are not rusing out (Tacomas are). Malibus are not flying by at 100mph out of control (Camrys are). Malibu hybrids are not suffering from failing brakes (Prius are). Corvette HID headlights don't fail at an alarming rate (Prius do).

GM let this problem with steering on the Cobalt go WAY too long, and will now pay a much higher price than if they had done the right thing. BUT, it could be SO much worse. Just ask Toyota.

Automotive News is reporting that the recall is on 1.3 million not 1.1. They are also reporting that this is a voluntary recall, not mandated by the government. All this after 14 crashes and just one non fatal injury.

A sad farewell to a sad and ungainly little car . . . but nothing comparable to what is happening at Toyota by any stretch of the imagination.

If it's sad and ungainly what does that make Ford's pathetic small car offering?
Pick the right Cobalt and it's anything but.

GM's mistake here was using Toyota crap in their car.

GM recalls 1.3 million cars over steering fault

Power steering problem in Chevys, Pontiacs linked to 14 crashes, 1 injury

updated 5:58 a.m. ET, Tues., March. 2, 2010
DETROIT - General Motors Co is recalling 1.3 million compact cars in North America to address a power steering problem that has been linked to 14 crashes and one injury, the company said on Tuesday.

U.S. safety regulators opened an investigation on Jan. 27 into approximately 905,000 Cobalt models in the United States after receiving more than 1,100 complaints of power steering failures.

The recall covers the 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 in the United States; 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico, GM said in a statement.

GM blamed the fault on a supplier partially owned by Toyota.

GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz told the BBC at the Geneva Motor show: "This is a case where, yes, we would blame a partially Toyota-owned supplier."

Mr Lutz said the supplier had not met "all requirements for reliability and durability".

"So we will have to see who takes financial responsibility," he said. "But this is a risk you sometimes take when you buy a complete system from a supplier."
