This competes with other small, FWD-only crossovers like the Niro, Soul, Venue & Kona....which Hyundai/KIA sells a LOT of so I think Chevy is just fine swapping that fugly 1st generation Trax with this less expensive, far more attractive and roomy version. The Trax & Trailblazer are really the only two "small" crossovers in the Chevy lineup, I don't think that's too many. The Equinox really doesn't feel like a small crossover.
KONA is available in AWD I believe. Venue, no.

The Dave B YouTube guys shows a couple of new Trax next to Trailblazers, starts about :20 on the video, the height difference is noticeable:

He's doing a full video later.

(Quick glance of a Camaro and Z06 Vette later in the video...niiiiice.)

The Bolt battery comment at the end was quite enlightening as far as attaining the $7500 tax credit into the future.

I really think this will be the one for me.

I also think that we all need to consider the gap in Chevy's lineup that this is meant to fill: the Cruze and Sonic are gone. With those cars no longer produced, this needs to be inexpensive enough to get Sonic and Cruze owner's to reconsider another FWD compact vehicle in the Chevrolet portfolio. Just because it's shaped like an SUV we feel that it should have AWD but an inexpensive FWD crossover is what was needed to fill that gap.

I'm with you, I'm liking it. As a sedan/hatch guy, what I hope to see--when I finally see one--is more of a wagon than a crossover/SUV which I don't like. So far so good. I'll have to test drive the 1.2T/6sp to see if I can live with it.

Believe me I'm hesitating about the lower MPG. I easily get 40MPG on the highway with the Sonic, dropping to 32MPG (maybe +10%=35MPG if I drive slower) is a concern.

My Sonic was the 1.4T with the 6 speed auto, I love it. Normally could get near 40 (36-38-ish), bought it because it reminded me of the GTI Mk1 (mine was a hatch). My daughter bought it from me at 100K miles, it's still running around. I appreciated the "cheap" interior plastics because it still looks new inside. No cracked soft touch stuff, no stained door panels, no scratches from picking up stuff from Home Depot. This Trax does look wagon-esque to me as well, and I love that.

Glad to hear your daughter's Sonic is still going strong, I’m only up to 72K miles on mine! The funny thing is that whenever I seriously consider getting something new like the Trax, I think to myself how much I really like the Sonic and say "nahhhh". Eight years and I still enjoy jumping in and rowing the gears. Or heading out on the highway for a little trip (5hrs to Cape Cod from Maine recently).

Heavy discounts on the Trax might get me to change my mind, we’ll see how they do selling 180K this year!

Yeah, despite the "underpoweredness" being complained about here, I imagine it will sell well. Most car buyers aren't gear heads and if it looks good and the price is right, they'll buy it. It would a great first car for well-heeled parents to get their kid for going to college, a single parent needing cheap reliable transportation with a warranty in a time when used cars are sometimes priced higher than new, or a good second car for a family. Heck, it might even be flat-towable for RV owners.

Another new gap will be something lively driving that's inexpensive. So I wish this was rwd-based awd.

That won't happen if it needs to be inexpensive. As sad as it is, GM had to build this to a price point which is why we don't get a lot of the options/standard features they get overseas. We might after the first year and if it sells well, but I can understand why they held back some stuff.

I'm still just wishing it had more power, not a lot but some.
-Adding AWD would add a lot of cost.
-Making it any bigger would make it too close to other vehicles in the lineup
-Giving it a more powerful engine though...I can't imagine putting the 1.3 in it instead of the 1.2 would cost all that much more..and doesn't it get just as good, if not better fuel economy?

One MPG more on the 1.3L, most likely due to the transmission.

Chevy seems to be saying: "want a bit more power? want AWD? buy a Trailblazer".

The cheapest 1.3T TB starts around $26K (LT FWD), the AWD starts about the same (LS AWD). The Trax starts at $21.5K, call it $22.5K with alum wheels and heated seats.

Not saying I agree with it, just there it is.

$4K-$5K is a deal breaker for some, so I get it. Me, I can't think of more than 3 days in the past year where I would have wanted but not necessarily needed AWD to get to where I need to be so for me, I'm not willing to spend the money on something I may or may not ever use or have a desperate need for. For that reason, I'm cool with them pushing the availability up to the pricier Trailblazer. For some people, yeah, I get it....they can't function without AWD and so the Trax is a "No". Choice is a good thing.

You can tell they're shooting to avoid too low of a volume, but how thin can the city utility pie be sliced?

I was thinking something same size under-$30k to $50ish, with a different mission. It's harder than ever to make an appealing (and useful) toy out of an appliance. I dread getting another fwd. If so, it the choice turns to saving $ in lieu of fun.

So, after reading this I feel more secure in thinking that GM intends this car to replace the Cruze and, obiviously, the previous generation Trax:

"Sources close to the matter tell GM A**** that 2024 Chevy Trax units will be allocated to dealerships using the following three factors:

  • 40 percent based on Chevy Cruze units sold during its final three years
  • 40 percent based on previous-gen Chevy Trax units sold over two years
  • 20 percent based on competitor performance in a dealership’s local market (if the market sees a lot of sales of competing models)
Simply put, dealers that moved a plethora of Cruze and Trax units should receive a greater allocation of 2024 Trax units."

As per usual, the line won't paste here from "that other place", but a Google search will bring it up.

Yup. That's kinda what I got out of it too... But... IMO, it still wont be good enough for those countless buyers who really want the small car and not this. ... EDIT: :) Which is why Toyota, Honda, Nissan and on and on are still in that market space. Phooey on the sad sack 'murica makes, Stellantis?, Ford, and gm.
