GM Ditches Standard Alloys On Sonic
Chevy changes their mind on wheel options for the 2013 Sonic.

During the launch of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic the bow-tie brand made a fairly big deal out of something rather small: the car's wheel options. Instead of rolling base Sonic's out with the normal steel wheels and plastic covers, Chevy opted to provide 15-inch alloys as standard fare. Apparently the brand has changed their mind, however, because a keen GMI reader has found that the 2013 Sonic has steel wheels standard, like everyone else.

Chevrolet opted for standard alloy wheels for reasons extending beyond ascetics. According to press releases and materials presented during the car's launch last year, engineers wanted standard alloys for the improved ride quality. At the car's launch engineers stated that the standard alloys reduced road noise in the cabin and provided a smoother ride. In fact, it was stated that a tremendous amount of effort was put into the wheel and tire combination of the Sonic, including the optional 16-inch alloys.

For 2013 Sonic LS now has 15-inch steel wheels as standard equipment. Buyers must now opt for the mid-range LT trim to get the alloys that were standard in 2012. Chevrolet has added Bluetooth, steering-wheel audio controls and blind-spotter mirrors standard on the 2013 Sonic to apparently offset the wheel change.

To be fair, nearly every competitor also has steel wheels standard in the sub-compact segment. The only difference is that none of the competitors launched their car with alloys only to make a big deal out of it and remove them a year later.

Outside of the wheel change, the Sonic continues to have a lofty standard equipment list, including 10 airbags. For 2013, the Sonic has also gained several new trim and wheel options, including spoilers and 17-inch alloy wheels on select models.

The 2013 Sonic is already appearing at Chevrolet dealerships.

And the additional standard equipment is mentioned where?

De-contenting on just the second model year is absolutely SHAMEFUL!!

GM, Ford and many others have done it for years. It especially makes people mad when they get the same vehicle (normally a pick=up) several times as either personal or company vehicles. When you automatically order exactly the same vehicle and then find it doesn't have the same equipment as you had in your old one, it makes you want to buy another brand just to get even with the cost cutting they did not disclose. Back in the 80s, one company removed the door switches from the rear doors and the interior lights only came on when the front doors were opened. You had to get a higher trim level to have the interior light come on with the rear doors. I chose a different brand when my company car came due the next time.

That's not a small deal to me. I always want alloys over steelies.

Agreed, wheels are a deal-breaker on a car decision for me. I will not own a car if I don't like the wheels that are on it. Sounds stupid to some people, but it's important to me.

Let the de-contenting begin!!

This is a fair trade-off.

Most stock wheels are blah anyway. I'd rather have the stuff they added above instead of the alloys. And if the steelies with poverty caps started to bother me, I'd just buy some inexpensive wheels off eBay stick those on it.

They should have came with blue-tooth and blind-spot mirrors last year, to me, those are not adds, those are “oops, we forgot” on the 2012.

Again, GM is the one that stuck out its chest and beat it so proudly.

I love all of the apologists! Thanks for the laughs! Keep up the good work! (notable to note even fan-boi Germy's not fighting this one)

Also I liked the original title better: Just Kidding: GM Ditches Standard Alloys On Sonic

Re: Just Kidding: GM Ditches Standard Alloys On Sonic

"...ask NOT what RIMs are STANDARD; ask what RIMs USED to be STANDARD..."

...so, obviously, all that marketing HYPE about sound and ride quality was a LIE, cause this year it's not needed?!?!

"...to CONTENT and NOT to CONTENT..." that is the (same) "old/new" GM way!

Old GM is back!

Unbelievable.

As long as the decontented car comes cheaper - or at least cheap - that's fine.

Face it, anybody who cares about getting alloys (and they made some people care with their launch publicity) can easily get them. It's not like anyone's going to be deceived.

I will agree to a point. While I have a certain thing for wheels, I'm also not the type to buy a base model anything, so this change probably wouldn't affect my anyway were I in the market right now for a Sonic. But the main issue is more to what NSAP pointed out in that they made such a big deal out of this car having them standard to begin with. To now make that change really puts egg on their face.

GM has steel wheels that look like rims but for some reason they wont use them more often. Why I do not know because this would be a perfect model for them.

#22 ·
This just seems wierd, why they would go to all the trouble to promote the fact to be the only car to come standard with alloys to only have to decontent it the next year, did they forget that they had said that to everyone last year.

I've been waiting to see nsap's reaction to this. Personally, I would never even consider the LS model now...wheel covers are a deal breaker for me.

I could care less about the stuff they added, the wheels just look economy car cheap.

If GM would shut their pie orifices once in a while then they will not have to go back , and explain why something they shouted from the roof tops is now not important. I swear that whole company needs a gag order in effect that is punishable with death by stoning and / or firing squad. Toyota, and Honda like to do engineering by press release, and GM seems to like to commit Seppuku via press release it is quite apparent.

The anti-GM trolls are out in numbers today. GM can not do anything w/o having someone blasting them. No need to get blown out of proportions for something so minor. They did add other features to offset the wheels.

You still can get those wheels if you want them that bad!

All automakers shuffle features, trims, and colors on their vehicles from one model year to the next, and also apply engineering changes that may not be documented in sales and marketing literature. It's an integral part of value engineering activities.

Perhaps its best to jettison the word "decontenting" as applied to these examples. As with the 2013 Sonic, the 2013 Chevy Cruze in the U.S. market adds a number of features over the 2012 car that are likely to be more important to customers than the Z-Link rear suspension on low and midline models: MyLink infotainment system, standard USB and bluetooth HFP on LS models, PZEV version of the 1.8L engine, available blind spot monitoring/cross traffic alert/rearview camera, heated outside mirrors available on LT and Eco models, cruise control & floor mats standard on Fleet model.

Also, if the Z-Link suspension is really that significant to a potential customer considering a Cruze 1LT, it's included with the RS package on that trim level. So it's not as if the feature has been eliminated.

It is disappointing to hear about this change but the worst part about it is that they'll probabaly put some awful plastic hubcap. Steel wheels don't really bother me as long as they are sporty and attractive. The current Base Camaro comes with a very cool looking black painted steel wheel with a trim ring. Why can't Sonic steel wheels be like this? Remember all the Cool GM Steel wheels from the 60's and 70's? If the Base Sonic had cool looking steel wheels they could still be as distinctive as the alloys.

Prolly wont be a huge deal when it comes to sales...But still, this is dumb. I thought it was a great move on GM's part to make alloy wheels standard on the Sonic. It was awesome to see even the lowest of the Sonic models sporting the wheels. It really gave an upscale look to the car IMO. It was something I wanted them to do with the Cruze as well.

bad move by GM IMO, this was a nice little thing that the Sonic had over its rivals...

atleast they arent replacing them with plastic rims, I would be super pissed.
