I am sorry to say so, but I believe the Malibu is becoming the "overhyped car of the year" (which is so unlikely and so good for GM). I really don't think a car on the old, tired platform that doesn't even support a rear armrest is worth of all the hype, but what's good for GM is good for America, isn't it ;)

Malibu has its own styling issues, like the largish heavish body which suddenly starts to look ridiclous once you go down to the base wheel size and regular ride height (which is pretty high for most GM NA cars for some reason), the "wart-like" front end and the "cut-off" rear end that looks like it came from a totally different vehicle. Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice car and an astonishing improvement for Chevrolet, but I can't find it vastly superior to Accord in terms of styling.

I also believe the person who saw the Sonata in the Accord has a very well-developed imagination. I could see bits of the old Accord in the Sonata, but the new one?

:rolleyes:i've seen the base models malibus and find them to be supprisingly nice, so much so i think im going to get a LT instead of a LTZ. im not sure where you get the wart front end from....too much time in front of the mirror perhaps?:p:

I really believe the front end looks like soemthing has grown on top of it, it is not revoltingly ugly (rather nice), but I would hardly call it coherent styling.

The Sebring indeed looks like the stylists desperately tried to make it look like something similar to what the new Accord is, but failed to do so by adding loads and loads of makeup rather than actually shaping the car nicely.

I also share concerns with the Mailbu hype. I suppose a year will tell the story. I recall the hype over the Saturn Aura; it was the car that would bring car buyers back to GM. While a good car, it hasn't produced the numbers that everyone was flaunting in the first days. The same applies to the Buick Lucerne, people claimed it was the car to change GM fortunes. Only two years later and it's already become yet another fleet car. Even the Lambda success story is somewhat skewed by the fact that while Lambda sales are hot, the Trailblazer/Envoy and 900 series sales are cool. There appears to be a canibalistic effect in play here. If the Mailibu is really as good as people say, then watch what happens to Impala, G6, Grand Prix, Aura etc. sales before we bring out the champagne. I'd consider switching my Buick to a Malibu.

Please don't flame me, it's just my observations. As the owner of a Buick LaCrosse (Allure) and a GMC Envoy, I want GM to be successful with quality product that the public wants. I'm not a critic, just a realist that has come to believe that there are a lot of great vehicles on the market produced by other manufacturers. It doesn't matter if we like Accords, Camrys, Altimas etc., their buyers do like them and see no reason to look elsewhere for their next vehicle. I know many people who wouldn't even look at a GM product because of past experiences. While not fair, it is reality. The only way any manufacturer is going to make a huge dent in the market will be by introducing new product that the public wants and that others aren't offering.

The Malibu is likely a very nice car entering a market full of very nice cars, but it's not that unique product that will change the market.

My 2 cents.

The Aura got a lot of hype from GM, and the NA COTY award got a lot of press.

But the Aura never got the positive reviews that Malibu has gotten. It got generally good reviews but with a lot of reservations. Car and Driver put the Malibu in it's "Ten Best" list. The Aura finished fourth out of six midsize cars in a comparison last year (though ahead of 5th place Camry).

The Malibu has received a ton of high praise and "best in class" comments. The worst anyone says about the Malibu is that it's in the same league as Accord and Camry. That's good company to be in.

Maybe in the end if Malibu doesn't sell, it will be the most over-hyped car of the year. But it seems to be off to a good start.

I really don't see what so good looking about the malibu. It seems old mannish to me. Interior and exterior. Which is goods because that will be the people buying them. Mazda6 is probably the best looking car in the class. Accord Camry, and Altima are all kind of dull. Some more then others. The altima is looking old because its front end has been on the maxima for the past 5 years.
