2023 Ford Escape First Drive Review: New ST Line adds much-needed style
The refreshed Escape looks better, gets improved tech

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — I’ve always liked the current Ford Escape and have been able to look past its flaws, chiefly uninspired looks and drab interiors, in favor of its respectable driving dynamics and overall practical execution within the small SUV segment. Its refresh for the 2023 model year helps smooth some of those rough edges out. It’s still nothing mind-blowing, and the Escape inhabits a mighty competitive slice of the market, but the new ST-Line Elite trim only reiterated why I like this vehicle, and now it’s even easier to recommend.

The 2023 Ford Escape gets subtle exterior updates that go a long way to making this little crossover more attractive. It sees the most improvements up front, where a new grille mimics the handsome looks of the Ford Edge, with even a whiff of Mustang Mach-E. The grille transforms in shape from a goofy smile to a determined grimace, and is moved higher in the fascia with the Blue Oval placed inside instead of above (which is why it now looks more like the Edge instead of the European-market Focus). The new LED headlights — reflectors are standard, but higher trims get projectors — get a more serious look to them, too. Our ST-Line Elite also has a fresh light bar spanning the width of the nose below the hood (it looks fantastic at night), which is a tad reminiscent of the thicker bar spanning the face of the F-150 Lightning. The hood is also slightly reshaped with more prominent creases.

Nailing an iPad to a dash that isn't rectilinear is not style.
It's cheap and lazy.

Exterior is same at it ever was. Blah.
Meanwhile, GM just delivered a bunch of lookers to the compact CUV class.

The Escape will be gone by 2027, the plant is being converted to build Ford's new CE1 EVs. That includes a small rugged utility and small pickup. There will be no Escape EV.

Farley is forcing Ford out of the 2-Row crossover space...Mach E will be it. It's one of the reasons Lincoln is forced to go to China for Nautilus production.

Ford is all about 3-Row stuff however, but it's going to be WEIRD so get ready.

I think Ford is going to miss the mark horribly with their 3-Row EV, and then fail to grow Mach E and ultimately exit the segment. Their Truck and SUV stuff is more promising.

I guess you mean EV and ICE versions of F series, Ranger, Maverick, Bronco, and Bronco Sport, and this 3 row EV and Mach E will fail and be discontinued. Too bad for the Canadian employees at the soon to be discontinued Edge/Nautilus plant.

WTH is going on with Ford these days? Dropping their most popular vehicles, tons of recalls, billions of dollars in warranty work...
Ford has its own version of "zero, zero, zero" grand delusions that conflict with the company's ability to design, build, and market high quality products. :(

I don't mind the refresh, which is basically all this is on an old model.

Ford is expanding production at Hermosillo, I think they were only at two shifts and are expanding it to 3. Ford is always reluctant to expand production because it costs money and becomes expensive to rollback. I have to think they want to keep volume on Bronco Sport and Maverick within safe levels just to prevent the costs associated with ramping up and ramping down, in addition to keeping the margins richer and avoiding ATP erosion. I'm not sure if Maverick threatens other truck sales, but it has to have some effect on Ranger which is chronically out of stock anyway. It's hard to know what is intentional and what is just chronic demand underestimation. I tend to believe the former, Ford is nervous about overbuilding unless it's F-150.

These are my figures from the website linked in my previous post. After I show you mine, then you may show me yours.

I used your figures. The 2023 total is sales reported through May (5 months). (310,538 /5=62,108) (62,108*12=745,291) 2022:653,957 2023(Proj):745,291

I like the revised front end. It looks good. I was hoping they would upgrade the interior materials but these look as cheap as they did before the upgrade. And that infotainment screen is too big for that space. I hate the tacked-on look that so many manufacturers are doing but I also hate the oversized screens that more carmakers are starting to use.
