Mini has been celebrating its 50th anniversary for most of 2009, with special editions--even a Rolls-Royce custom Mini--multiplying like rabbits. But the next few weeks are set to be very busy for Mini as the company is set to host the reveal of a pair of all-new concepts, the first of which has just been revealed in the form of the 2009 Mini Coupe Concept.

August 26 is the actual 50th anniversary of the Mini brand, and to celebrate the occasion, the company has unveiled the startling ‘Coupe Concept’ which has been revealed a few hours early thanks to the guys at EVO. Set to go on display next month at the Frankfurt Auto Show alongside a rumored open-top speedster concept, the new Coupe Concept previews what could possibly the next Mini variant destined for production and the by the looks of it we sure do hope so.

Mini is calling it a prototype for now but its John Cooper Works-tuned 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 208 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque (206 pound-feet with overboost) is entirely plausible for a production model....

I Kinda like it too. The only thing that is giving me pause is the way that the roof is done. I understand the want to keep the option of a dual tone "floating" roof like the Cooper and Clubman, but I just don't like the way that it was done. The shallow pitch of the windshield looks really good.

I doubt that it will wind up being lighweight, as they have pretty much chopped off the traditional roof. I cannot see them developing anything special with the platform to differentiate it from the other platform-mates. I imagine that they will offer both a standard-engined model and the S-engined model (read turbo) however, I doubt that they will give this anything special compared to the Cooper and Cooper S. There is no way that any form of back seat will fit in there, so I would imagine that this WILL be a 2-seat model. I'd say AWD is a no-go, otherwise it will wind up looking like the Crossman... I'd prefer FWD over a jacked-up coupe.

I for one wouldn't mind my car having a less-useful hatch/roof height. Most of the time I don't put anything large enough into it to utilize the vertical cargo space.

I don't mind the roof, but I'd probably go with something more like this....

;)
While it is attractive, I'm not a fan of it not fitting into the "floating roof" look that MINI is going with. I really like the invisible pillar look.

I think something like this would be acceptable, I don't have the time or ability on this computer to do what I really think it should look like, but you can kind of get the gist...

why couldnt they change it up a lil so it doesnt look so much like the normal mini? That mini look is getting really old. its time for a design change!

Agreed.... the car was already small to begin with, but to make the roof line even lower seems kinda dumb

Me likey. The roof could be fixed for those that don't care/like it.

Re: 2009 Mini Coupe Concept

why do people care what is going on in another car company? why post that stuff on here? remember this is a gm site! not just a car site, or a car mag site! its a gm site for a reason!

maybe if people looked harder to find gm basted post to put on here this would be a better site that is just for gm cars and trucks! instead we get post about other cars and trucks i just dont get it

The idea is to be able to read news about GM and GM's competition. While most of my interest on this site is for GM cars, I beleive the site would be a LOT worse if we didn't talk about the competition also.

I don't think this site ever had any intention of being for 'only GM cars and trucks'. If you look at the sub forums, you will see most of it is for GM cars and trucks, but there are also sections devoted to just the competition.

I can already feel the neck cramps coming on....

Time to go see the chiropractor.

Seriously, can anyone around 6'2" sit in that thing? The roofline is ridiculous!

Its a 2 seater, so there's a possibility the front seats were repositioned to make up for the 2 inch lower roofline.
At 53.4", the Mini Coupe Concept is just 0.8" lower than the 2010 Camaro (54.2"), but is 4.4" taller than the Corvette (49").

PS: The Mini Coupe is a concept, changes can still be made if they decide to make a production version.

I like it, the top is a little weird but the rest is awesome!

On a side note, Mini's are great cars. My wife had a '05 Mini convertable and we loved it. We had to get rid of it as we had a baby and it didn't pan out very well as a family car (I got her a Malibu Maxx). If we had a use for it (and space), we would have kept it.
