It's the SLE, extended cab, dual fuel tank, cab&chassis model.

Where the heck is the fuel filter?

I've googled for some time, and all I've found is that there is a screen on the fuel pump itself [in the tank], and that there should be an inline canister fuel filter along the fuel line inside the frame rail on the drivers side. But I've looked from where the fuel line heads upwards to the fuel tank to where it goes into the fuel rail, and can't see one.

Did GM decide there's no need for one?

I'm concerned because I've just taken out the fuel rails/fuel injectors, and the emptying the fuel in the rails out into a cup, there was a lot of crude in there, and I'm getting a P0307 code. I'll clean out the rails and replace the injectors, but I'm concerned that this problem will just keep happening if the filter is still dirty.

I just bought this truck used with 190k km on it and don't have any repair history for it other than a visibly new water pump and that the previous owner used a crappy mechanic for repairs [lines/hoses not in their routing clamps, broken exhaust bolts, missing fan shroud bolts].

And of course, soon after posting, you always find the information you need.

Evidently, 2004 and probably newer GM/Chev trucks [with gas engines] incorporate a "permanent" filter within the fuel pump in the fuel tank.

I guess that was 190k of crude that built up in the fuel rails [possibly aggravated a bit by some fuel-injector cleaner loosening stuff along the way?].

I'll try swapping where the injectors are installed [to see if it's a bad injector problem or something else] after cleaning everything as best I can, and see how it all works when reassembled.
