I've been working on moving my brochure and magazine collection into new containers to store in the closet until I can build file cabinets. This evening I came across a brochure I remember specifically because it contained something I had never seen before. The brochure is for the 1995 Ford F-Series and the memorable content is in the towing guide that lists the maximum trailer weights for the different drivetrain configurations.

Notice the little footnote for I6 equipped 2WD/Manual trucks with 2.73 gears and 4WD/Auto trucks with 3.08 gears. "Not available for trailer towing."

Not to knock Ford for building economy-minded trucks for hauling light loads, but no towing at all? Not even the payload weight?

The black F-150 4x4 at the bottom of the page is a pretty sweet truck though. I just hope it has 3.55 gears or an automatic!

ALL truck and SUVs should have this kind of data. Some still do, most do not.

I see what you're talking about. I have a hunch they didn't build too many I6 2.73 geared F-150s.....but I guess those that did find one used it for hauling stuff (but no towing).

I am most amazed by the 20,000 lb GCWR for the 4.10 geared 7.3 PSD HD models. Notice the tow rating is "only" 10,000 lbs. That means a 6,500lb truck could, legally, still tow a 10k lb trailer even if it had 3,500 lbs of rocks in the bed. Wow.

Too bad those PSD were so slow, and loud as a garbage truck. But damn, they were reliable!

The tow ratings shown were for receiver hitches only. The Power Stroke and 460 equipped trucks could tow up to their GCWR with a gooseneck or fifth wheel. GM listed the fifth wheel ratings in their brochures and Ford did so later on.

As for the 7.3L, I'd much rather have one of the old Power Strokes than the newer ones. The 6.0L and 6.4L are crap. Plus, with some tuning you could really open them up for some crazy power. Just pray for your transmission. :)
