The Death of the SUV

by Mike Krumboltz

The Buzz Log

Dearly beloved. We gather here today to mourn the demise of the sport utility vehicle, or "SUV" as its friends liked to call it.

The gas-guzzler lived a full life, driving in the fast lane from the 1990s to the mid-2000s. Alas, it fell ill a few years ago and never recovered. And really, we can't say the death came as a surprise. For years, folks complained about the environmental impact of low-mileage vehicles. Over time, those voices grew louder, but still the SUV fought on, proudly taking up two parking spaces and scaring hybrids from its lane.

But then, gas prices soared and the SUV's vital signs plummeted. As much as people love large cars, the costs to keep fuel in the tank proved too much to take. As the New York Times reported, it now costs $100k to own and keep a similarly inefficient full size pickup running for five years. And so people pulled the plug on their trucks and SUVs, taking the beleaguered vehicles off life support and into the museum of dead car fads.

U.S. News and World Report has written a thoughtful and compelling obit on the yuppie chariot. Read it and remember the SUV's positive qualities as well as its faults. It's what it would have wanted.

Well my dreams of having a jacked up 2-door Tahoe have gone out the door, but I can still totally rock out in a Vue or Terrain

Sales are doing pretty well.
However, I thought combined monthly sales of the 3 were supposed to be around 20,000. Last I looked, they weren't making that number.

Then again, GM underestimated the popularity of Enclave, so once they tweak the product mix, they might get to 20,000. Add Traverse to the mix, and you might just get there.

unfortunately, GM shouldn't be adding another vehicle to meet sales numbers. Plus having 4 nearly identical CUV's isn't the smartest idea.

Still....it would have been smart if Traverse was a minivan, which would have given differentiation to the family. But if minivan sales are falling, then, perhaps a CUV will do better?

Too funny. The SUV as a mainstream soccer-mom mobile are definitely over. But people like myself that lead an active lifestyle and need something to go off-roading, camping, and mountain biking, will continue to buy them. We're the people that bought the old SUVs before they became mainstream. I think SUVs will retreat back to their roots of being an off-road ready utilitarian mobile. All this Escalade, Denali BS will fade away quick.

Funny, Article. SUV's are dead? Well I just brought one, a 2008 GMC Yukon XL Denali.

What can you buy that you can fit 2 Adults, three small kids (two are in booster seat and a baby seat) and also fit a stroller, kids stuff and go shopping or on a trip?

I would need two cars, how much would that cost?

SUV will always be here as long as Parents have three or more kids.

A minivan. :)

But the Bling factor would be considerably less. Read my review of our T&C in the Reader Review section.

Sounds like an article written by someone that always wanted an SUV, but couldn't afford it. There's some people that just can't stand for other people to have nice things. If you drive around in an '81 Citation that gets 12 mpg, that would be OK. But if you're in a Tahoe or expedition getting 15-20 mpg, thats a no no. Thats too nice a vehicle, and people shouldn't be allowed to have nice things.

I suppose an argument could be made that a minivan would fill those requirements more economically. Unless, of course, that you have some towing requirements too.

SUVS are stupid and most people do not need them. Why would you want station wagon with oversize tires and poor fuel economy. SUVs are good for nothing. They slow to 60. they roll over easy. They are unsafe. There is nothing good about them. Pick up trucks are different. With trucks you can tow and use them for work but suvs are just stupid. People are finally realizing that.

Hmm... lets see. They tow more, seat more, hold more, are better at off roading, and are safe for the people who are in them.

Is that more than was most people need? Probably. But whatever you drive is probably more than what you need as well.
