Let's look at this logically. Gas is going up in price. Eggs, milk, etc. as well. Every time you turn around, the price of just about everything is going up and up and up. Even GM keeps raising the prices of the product to dealers on a regular basis. With all of that being said:

WHY ARE WE CONTINUALLY LOWERING OUR PRICES?? I don't know about you guys but we are a way above average grossing Chevrolet store. For whatever reason salespeople/management are starting deals at a couple of bucks over invoice is beyond my comprehension. Do you really need to beg someone at a nothing deal on a Malibu? Do you really need to start at $5000 off list on a Z06?

The pinhead consumers who think they are doing us a favor by buying our product need to be taught a lesson. If every dealer would start getting some balls and asking for list or over and sticking to their guns, we would all be making more money to buy the things that are going up in price everyday. Why shouldn't we get the money we deserve?

Do you think GM cares if your dealer is profitable? Hogwash! All they care about is us moving overpriced (to the dealer) product for nothing deals.

Let's stop the insanity NOW and start asking for the money we deserve. Just remember the next time you start your deal at $100 over how much money you could have gotten if you only had the balls to ask for and get it.

Dealer employees please respond ONLY. We already know what the self righteous consumers are going to say.

I'm done for now.

Perhaps a career change would be a better option. I'm a fireman, so by your logic the city I work for should raise taxes so I can afford to buy stuff. Then, every city should do the same so people don't just go shop somewhere else. How would you like that?

Pinheaded consumer eh? hmm as a pinheaded consumer myself, should I even question why I should pay 7000-9000 more for a Malibu in Canada than in the states? Or should I just shut my mouth and say, heres my hard earned money...go ahead take it! Btw I'd watch your mouth, alot of consumers are smarter than the "dumbass car salesmen. (see I can stereotype too)

Give me a break....my family is actually looking for a new midsized sedan(hopefully in the States), and we sure as hell wouldn't come to your dealership.....we wouldn't want to do you a dis-service by purchasing a vehicle from you.

Again, you are entitled to put your two cents in but since this is "Employees and the Inside" and the three of you are obviously on the "Outside", I could care less about your opinions.

You three are specifically why prices at retail car dealers should be going up, not down.

Well, I'm slightly on the inside since my dad is a former GM employee. Plus, I try to get sales for GM as much as I can with friends and family, and since I basically sold the Malibu to my parents with little to no effort from the salesman...
It all comes down to simple marketing. If you overcharge the consumer, all he's going to do is laugh in your face and run across the street to the toyota dealer that sells for less and buy from there. Something that you especially should know is that consumers will typically buy from wherever they can get the best price. Not all of America is like me and some of the others on GMi who will always stick by GM no matter what.
As for the massive rebates and stuff, everyone does it. Like I said, consumers are always looking for the best price. If GM didn't offer the rebates and a camry was less expensive than a Malibu, then the average consumer would buy the camry.

Here's a better idea - kill the franchises and GM sells direct. The money for a dealership is in the parts/service dept anyway so why not have GM sell direct and dealerships turn into purely warranty/gm certified work facilities. That way Gm can charge what they wand and I don't have to hear the middle man complaining about being squeezed. :) Just a thought...

BTW my family since 1911 bought from the same GM/AMC-Jeep dealer until they sold out and went corporate 7 years ago so don't give me the "contributed to a Gm dealer" bit.

How am I supposed to buy the things that are going up in price everyday if I have to spend more than I have to on a car?

I think we as Salesman need to sell the value of these cars. Nobody should be over charged but they should not be given away either. I hear people all of the time come in and say "GM is hurting you should lower the price because they need the sale."
Chebby is a little frustrated like many of us and The "inside" forum is a place to vent not at the Dealership.
I think if there were less dealerships in each region they would not cut their throats all of the time. I have three Chevy dealers within ten minutes from my store and we hurt ourselves trying to get the same people to buy.

Im gonna respond to this only...As a salesman in Canada, YES you area pinhead...in a matter of speaking....If you would bother to ask, the rebates will offset ANY saving your thinking your going to get....

Also your going to the US, and UNLESS you have 30 grand sitting in the bank...and then it is still a bad idea....you are financing thru what? line of credit or mortage, or personal at what rate..??? GMAC rates on malibus are like 1.9, so 20ish grand at 6-9% or 20ish ggrand at 1.9%...you do the math.

then pay the freight and border hassles, or pay a broker to drop it at your door...inspections, your not saving much, and last time I checked the ONLY thing with 8-9 grand of a difference in the US was trucks and up, and even caddys, if you want to go to the US and pay cash, Ican give you 13 Grand off a caddy...SO ya your not all full of knowledge like you think you are.

a Malibu heres starts at 24ish, minus a rebate, I have 3 promos going for truck bucks and the like, so already IF IF IF IF it was 7grand diff, I already have 3 Grand of that eaten away with rebates, and ITS NOT 7-9 grand, now figure your interst rate diff, and dont forget to pay the broker, and add warranty cause yours wont have any for 6 months .......

I don think they are 16ish in the US

anyone who has thought this tru realizes, its not a saving going to the US

as for the pinhead comments, well someone hada bad day, and Ya there are pinheads out there, as there are sales guys out there taht are idoits....but you sir should sit down and really figure this out...

now imagin a line of credit at 7% and you only pay your interest for a few months, and pay for the car over 9 years, cause we all get lazy on our line of credit, add taht interest up....lol

The point is very simple so no one needs to get their panties in a bunch.

Everything else is going up in price and cars should be no different. If you don't feel that's right, you are entitled to your opinion. There is no reason for personal attacks. I'm thick skinned enough to take it so flame on.

However, the post was put here for dealers to answer but a choice few of you have decided to HIJACK this thread.

The moderators of the forum have been notified (no, it's not a threat) so that "Employees and the Inside" can have a friendly bitch session.

But seriously, if you have nothing nice to say without HIJACKING a thread, please keep it to yourselves.

So you don't care about the opinions of your "pinheaded" and "Self righteous" consumers? Wow.

You see why people dislike salesmen so much now.
Don't generalize his comments to the whole of people disliking the whole of salesmen. We have customers come by to just hang out and talk about cars every day with no intentions of buying something else.

I know that his comments are not going to sell cars and his attitude is not going to help him hold gross profit, however, I understand his point.

I do not see this thread going anywhere productive. Can someone close it?

I disagree I learn alot of what the customer thinks on threads like this. I like hearing what people think. As a consumer you all have a chance to hear what a salesman has to say.Salesman have to be careful what they say all day long. It is nice to have a place to vent.

Its actually very simple--if somehow every single dealer in the US, every brand, import, domestic, whatever, got together & agreed to only sell at MSRP, there would be a big drop in total sales. People naturally economize to some extent.

The key: Because there are many alternatives to buying a new car, demand is elastic, and the current market equilibrium would change if certain elements that determine that equilibrium significantly change. There is a significant portion of people that buy new cars despite not needing them. I personally am planning on replacing my '98 Civic this summer or fall, but if suddenly an increase in some element of the replacement cost put what I wanted out of my financial reach, I could easily keep the Civic for at least another 5 years because I don't need a new car, I want one.

Its happening now. Fuel has gotten more expensive, credit/housing issues, economic uncertainty, etc. Lots of folks have been hit in the pocketbook, & NA vehicle sales have dipped as people are being forced to adapt to the situation. Ecouraging stagflation probably isn't going to help.

Would a big drop in total sales caused by dealers not budging from MSRP be offset by the increased profit per sale? Maybe, maybe not, I personally doubt it, but its not my problem.

Best F#$%%^G Idea I have heard ever......Tha would end it...

Honda does it, Toyota does it, why not GM, FORD, well chrysler HAS to give their **** away, but thats another thread....

My biggest beaf or one of anyhow, is people come in here bitching cause I wont discout a cobalt 500 bucks, and then threaten to buy a honda...we all know they are not gonna budge....

Is it a better car, matter of opinion, but mine is thye have less warranty, less features, and cost way more...ya they holdtheir value better, but they should you PAY MORE FOR THEM, it evens out.....

everyone STICK to MSRP, make some more money....dealers kill themselves.....dealers who sell malibus under MSRP should be shot and PEEEEED on.......

I have sold 5 from here, one OVER MSRP, the only LTZ we had at the time and the rest AT MSRP, the last guy asked 'whats your best price and I will check Vancouver...'....have a nice drive, and shook his hand....THAT IS the price...comes back an hour later, its sold, so I ask, whats your offer on this one, its listed at $28,645 say $29,000 even......he bought it for 28,645....

my bitch for the day........let the selling begin.....

I am on the outside, and for once, I have to agree with Chebby on a few points. 1.) How many people out there are willing to take a minimal profit for something they are doing, and then work DOWN? 2.) Prices are going up, and while cars are too, the difference between invoice and sticker isn't. I would rather have a "fair" deal for the dealer, knowing that in the future I am going to need them do some work for me, and again would expect a "fair" deal.

Lowest price on identical goods and services is the goal. However, in most cases, while the goods are identical, the service is not. The premium that one pays is for the service, and if you want the lowest price with shoddy service, go there. I prefer to have better service, and will gladly pay a little more to get it.
