What's a good cell phone provider?

I used to have Sprint, I loved the price, phone, and customer service, but when it came to my network it sucked. I barely was ever able to get a strong enough signal when I wanted to make calls, and often lost calls. Even though I was in an area that was suppose to be covered and Lansing is a decent sized city, the coverage was pretty bad. I am currently with Nextel, which is way over priced. I think Verizon would be your best bet, I plan on going back when my year is up.

Cingular is buying out AT&T, and the new expanded Cingular will have an excellent network. I flew into AT&T before the merger cause the contracts were cheaper. The networks are identical, I'm on the GSM network, and it's superior to anything I've used before: Verizon (CDMA) and before that the old SNET (now Cingular) analog network.
Yup, totally true. My contract expires this week and I was thinking if I should stay with AT&T until it becomes Cingular (will they give out new phones?? well, doubt it) or switch to Cingular. Sadly, Cingular's plans seem kind of expensive, they have an activation charge, and their phones seem to be more expensive. I'm leaning towards GSM providers, because it's the best call quality I've ever used. Are AT&T and Cingular the only GSM providers?

I think T-Mobile has a GSM network as well... but I'm not sure if they have service down by you...
Yes, they have service here in Dallas. But we used to have T-Mobile when they were known as VoiceStream, but that was last year. The customer service was great, the phones were great, the reception was aweful. When they became T-Mobile the reception slightly improved...but it still stunk. Could it be because they're still new?
I'm really happy with Verizon. Consumer Reports ranked them No. 1 in virtually every major market in customer satisifaction. I've found that their plans are typically about $5/month higher than the others, but for the lack of problems, it's worth it.

If you live in Dallas the two best choices are Verizon or AT&T because they have the most mature networks since they were the first ones to go on air-circa 1984. The other nationwide carriers, Sprint, Nextel and T-Mobile are still in catch up mode.
Of course, if you are on the fringe reception area of the Metroplex, your results may vary. Ask about a 30 day trial period if you decide to switch, and squack to AT&T about your problem coverage areas. If they are ahead of the engineering curve, they should have a plan to provide coverage to where you are experiencing problems.

i have t-mobile. great nework , bad customer service. considering cingular due to roll over minutes option. have always heard bad things about sprint network. friends use to borrow my phone cause they can never get a signal.

I moved from Chicago to Dallas and stayed with Cingular and noticed no difference between either areas great coverage. I really like Cingular because of their Family Talk plans and their roll over mins. I have enough mins now that I never have to worry about going over at all. The only thing I'd change is their messaging plans, right now I pay $4.99 per month for 250 text messages. Thats incoming and outgoing, anythign after that it costs me .10 cents per message.
Little known fact Cingular signed an agreement with AT&T wireless a year and a half ago to share their network. So anywhere you're without a Cingular network if there is an AT&T network in the area you won't get charged for roaming. However that is meaningless if you get a nation wide plan, where there is no roaming no long distance anywhere in the country.
Just my two cents.

I guess it's a matter of what you want when you considering a new phone. Do you just want it to be a phone?? If so Cingulare has a Samsung flip phone (X-427) that is a really good phone for free (after mail-in rebate). I have the Samsung S307 and it's really nice. There's a good reason why Samsung is catching up to Nokia! The only bad thing about the X-427 is there is no caller ID on the outside of the phone, which means you have to open it up before you can see who is calling. Cingular also has a Nokia for free too, but I'm staying away from them for a while, nothing but problems with my old 3600 series.
You mentioned that your contract with AT&T is almost up you might be able to upgrade and get a new phone with them with another 1 or so agreement. I know Cingular allows you to upgrade your phone every two years. So it depends if you want to stay with AT&T.
Keep in mind the FCC isn't even looking at the Cingular/AT&T merger until the end of the year so it will be well into 2005 before AT&T customers become Cingular customers. Hmmm thinking ahead to the future merger it might be a good time to get away from AT&T in favor of Cingular. AT&T had the hardest time with number portability. Can you imagine the headache of converting and merging all the systems. hmmm yea I'm glad I'm on this side of the merger.
And to someones point earlier, the network made by these two companies merging should awesome!
