“We sold almost two trucks and SUVs for every one car last month, “said Jim Basil owner of the region’s second largest GM dealership. “That was a definite swing from May, June and July when we sold 100 cars versus 75 trucks and SUVs. That pace continued in the first three days of September.

“Lower gas prices have been a big plus as have manufacturer incentives that made trucks and SUVs more affordable,” he said.

The link doesn't work....but is that Buffalo NY? How much snow do they get there? I see that being a big "truck" area.

If those new trucks and SUV's were bought by trading in an old truck and SUV then aggregate fuel economy went up, emmissions went down, safety went up and sales went up. Everyone wins a little.

Yes yes, they should have traded a pick-up for a Prius but it would take a Tahoe purchase to trade out of a pickup with inequity these days.

I just hope the people that bought those trucks didn't avoid making the purchase when gas was over $4 in July just because it came back down to $3.50 in August. I remember last summer when everyone was up in arms that gas broke the $3 barrier. They all need to be ready for gas to rise over $4.50 next summer.

Oh noes!!! People actually buying what they want, the horror!!!
That's not the point. Can they afford what they want? Gas can easily go back up... so if people are going nuts buying vehicles that they can afford because gas is $3.50 but can't afford them if gas hits $4.00, they're foolish.

It costs me about $20-$30 bucks more now to fill my tank than it did before oil prices skyrocketed, it hurts but its not that big of a deal.

YEAH! It's almost like those IDIOTS that buy convertables in the spring, or those V8 cars like the G8, or Mustang, or CTSv or STS... Don't they REALIZE that the ONLY acceptable vehicle to buy is a gas sipping sedan that'll seat 5 if you sqeeze them in?

My neighbor is a roofer. He has 3 kids. Just bought an Acadia and a Sierra... I'm marching over to his house tonite and telling him what a jackass he is for not buying 2 aveos.

That's why it might make sense for a guy like to you buy a truck now... but we all know that there are tons of people that are way too far in debt, and would be hard pressed to find an extra 20-30 bucks per fill-up. People SHOULD buy what they want, but not if what they want doesn't fit in their budget.

Right, when did anyone say that a roofer with 3 kids shouldn't buy an Acadia or Sierra? I'm talking about the single female cashier with no kids who makes minimum wage and thinks that now that gas has droped to $3.50 that it's the time to buy a 12 mpg Hummer for $760 per month. This tiny drop in gas shouldn't convince people to buy vehicles they don't need or can't afford. I said nothing about people that DO need them or CAN afford them.

A delightfully irrational generalization. The thread has gone dumb.

I wish gas was $3.50 a gallon here, we are still around $4.00.

That being said, if you needed a truck and can afford it, I can't see why you wouldn't buy now. There are too many generalizations here thinking that most can't afford those vehicles. Perhaps some can't and shouldn't buy but maybe some can and were holding out for a "good deal".

Look at resale values, it's absolutely a great time to buy a used truck or SUV!

Who said that 'most' can't afford these?!? If someone wants a SUV they can go buy it. No one suggested otherwise. All I'm saying (for the fourth time) is that I hope that people that DON'T need a truck or SUV or CAN'T afford one aren't fooled into thinking that $3.50 gas makes it a good idea, because it isn't. The price of gas will go up again and the people that CAN'T afford one of these vehicles will feel the pinch.

I just feel for people that stretch themselves too thin on a whim, and don't realise that a little dip in the price of gas doesn't make a huge SUV the best choice for everyone. For some people, yes, but not for everyone.

What is there to "get"????!!!!

One thing you could get over is the arrogant attitude that tells you you are superior to everybody else (and their choices).

If they want or need SUVs and trucks they should be able to buy them. Period.

Resist the totalitarian urge to hamstring other people's choices to conform to your narrow view of what they "need".

How on earth is that possible?

Let people face the consequences of their actions.

Ummm. Honestly, M_RABID, Why are you driving a brand new Acadia?

Why didn't you buy an Aveo at the first place?
