It was a different time. We had been through the '73 and '79 gas crises, and big engines ate a lot of gas. The various governments had mandated both safety and CAFE, and we had detuned engines as a result. And the "new Chevrolet" from 1977 was becoming pretty stale after 14 model years. A facelift was the least they could do. Only trouble I had with it was that it LOOKED like it was lifted directly from an '86 Taurus.

Those 9C1 Caprices could boogity when you needed them to, though.

My god, that's a beautiful car. Check out that trick rearview mirror compass! I remember seeing the new '91 model at the auto show and loving it even as a wee lad.

It's too bad the door panels were so flimsy and the interior materials were so delicate. My cousin bought one of the first '91s. His was an LTZ with the sweet mirror, just like the one shown here, dark blue but with blue leather, and it was named Shamu. His was rattle-riddled after a couple of years and the interior squeaked like crazy, but it was so pretty. :)

Back in '90 10.5 seconds was a respectable 0-60. These cars also had a ridiculously tall rear gearset, as evidenced by the 27MPG highway number. The later models got much more respectable though. :D

Thanks for that! I used to live for that show back then, quite new in Denver. I thought then that the new Caprice was swoopy and stunning, loved the partially covered rear wheels and sleek overall shape. To this day I think it is a beautiful car.

I think the platform was initialized in 1977, the first 'downsized' fullsize. Please.......................don't quote me.

Ugh. What a toad. But all GM's styling in that era was abominable. Reatta. Lumina. Corsica. The W-bodies. Unmitigated eyesores all of them...

Ever wonder why GM didn't replace the B-body with a G-/H-body Caprice and Impala around '97? I think a sporty-looking G-body Impala would have made a good Maxima competitor, and been roomier. Then again, it might would have looked like a scaled-up '97 Malibu, or worse, the 2000 Impala (gag). But I reckon it would have stepped on the Intrigue's toes, as that was GM's contender in that segment.

As for "high maintainance" German cars... I'd rather pay the extra cost of ownership so I wouldn't have to drive around in some clownish heap like a '91 Caprice.

K...I'm looking for the difference between the car I posted, and the one you did.

Both 2 door posts, both supremely finicky, and not ever likely to be daily drivers, or even enjoyable in any way. :D

Seriously, had you ever driven my 9C1, even you would have been impressed. It didn't float like the one on Motorweek did, believe me.

Hey t-rex, ya ever get the idea that your "I hate everybody and everything" schtick is growing thin? You should because it is. You wouldn't know a crapmobile from a crap if it bit you on the arse.
