What are the implications of this announcement?

The Volt is a go for GM. No turning back now?
The performance characteristics, longevity and safety concerns have been satisfied?
Production-spec? Does that really mean final design is complete?
Will information about the gasoline generator be available?

What else will this change?
What else can we get from this?

It seems like GM wants the green mantle and obviously doesn't feel the competition can catch up in 18 months?

If this is indeed true, I don't think it's a good idea. Showing an Opel powered by E-Flex would be just fine. But if the Volt is planned for November 2010, I think it's a bad idea to show it so soon.

Final design done, 40 mile range done, unlimited budget - are the doubters starting to doubt their doubts? :)

Oh please please please DON'T SHOW IT YET!!!
That will give the competition 18 months to mimick and improve on the Volt's design.

SHOW IT IN DETROIT -- NEXT YEAR!!!

your right! dont show us yet, you'll be shooting your self in the foot GM!
but on the other hand, I dont think its going to be much to look at, I think its going to be so watered down.

Show Volt in Detroit 2009.
GM seems to show off their cars way too early.

The competition is far faster at copying and improving on designs that GM. It is best that GM plays their cards closer to the vest.
What are they really showing though? Is the competition going to reverse-engineer the E-Flex platform right there in the auditorium? Is Toyota going to see the Volt's exterior and suddenly figure out how to build attractive vehicles?

I'm usually not a huge fan of early showings, but this has some positives. One, it shows the world GM is not bluffing. Two, it's better to show the car with its real exterior as opposed to the show car (show car builds unrealistic expectations). Three, it sells GM's green image at a time when that's very important. And four, it opens the Volt to a new market (I wouldn't be shocked to see this come to the Continent as a Chevy, plain and simple).

I agree that GM should hold off til at least Detroit(NAIAS 2009 or even 2010) next January. The Camaro was shown way too early, IMHO. Now there has been a loong, a very long wait for those that want one. The production Volt should not be treated the same way.

I hope it isn't watered down b/c watering down a concept car is just dumb. The LaCrosse concept to production model is a prime example of this.

The next gen Toyota Prius is already done,so it will not help Toy. Honda is going to debut their new under $20K hybrid at Paris so it doesn't help them either ( and its probably why GM is showing it at Paris). I just heard Lutz on an AM talk show this morning talking about the Volt and he confirmed the Volt will be on sale Nov. 10,2010. GM HAS to keep the hype alive or they will be forgotten.

I'm sure the design has been done for a while now, and I'm also not surprised they were able to get a 40 mile range just on batteries ... I'm thinking they could potentially get quite a bit more. Here is what I'm worried about ... how long do those Lithium Ion batteries last? If I use how quickly my year old laptop and Camera Lithium Ion batteries need to be recharged, then I'm worried. I always believed that to be the bigger problem with Volt. The biggest problem I see ... cost. GM may have an unlimited budget to develop the Volt, but consumers do not have an unlimited budget to purchase one. I've been hearing rumors the Volt will be pushing $40k. That's a hard pill to swallow when the Prius is mid-$20's, even if the Volt would offer more for your money.

I'm excited about the Volt ... I think it's great for GM ... but GM still has some pretty difficult hurdles to cross.

Its either October 2008, or first week of Jan 2009. Its 2 months difference, not really going to throw the game. If everyone is waiting on GM to show the car before they start working on thier own, then they have waited too long. All they can do now is just one up the Volt, in which the Volt will one up them, and so forth and so on.

Volt has to win on economy, design and price. Showing it in Paris would be cool if they could pull it off. Being the city of light, I would like to see something off that.

I agree...the LaCrosse concept (sans the show car "pick up" bed) was stunning in photos and in real life here at the auto show...and look what was built instead! I hope the Volt ends up a real head turner.
