U.S. to fine air bag maker Takata $14,000 per day
Staff and wire reports 10:08 a.m. EST February 20, 2015
The Detroit News

Richmond, Va. — Starting Friday, the U.S. government began fining Japanese air bag maker Takata Corp. $14,000 per day for failing to fully cooperate in a long-running investigation of faulty and potentially dangerous air bag inflators.

The inflators, which are in cars made by 10 auto companies, can explode with too much force, spewing shrapnel into drivers and passengers. At least six people have been killed and 64 injured worldwide due to the problem.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the fines on Friday in Richmond, Virginia, on a bus tour to promote a major transportation bill. He called Takata a “bad actor” and said the fines will grow each day that it fails to comply with two special orders issued last year by the department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Until a Special Prosecutor is appointed for these sort of willful negligence cases, nobody will do crap about it.

Fourteen grand per day for Takata is like fining your typical GMI member five cents a day. Wow, big ouch!

Prosecutions and prison time will change the tide. Whether it's GM ignitions, Faaaahrstone Taaahrs and Exploders, or shrapnel-enhanced airbags, NOBODY PAYS A PRICE.

Oh, except the folks who are killed or have half their face torn off. Hey, no biggie!
