http://www.leftlanenews.com/toyota-buying-back-rusty-tacomas-for-more-than-fair-value.html#more-7026

May as well send this thread straight to where the bashing is best.:

About a month ago, LLN reported that Toyota would buy back any of its 1995-2000 Tacoma pick-up trucks if it found its frame rails to be overly rusted and cannot be repaired. Now, there is word via online forums that the Japanese auto manufacturer is paying nearly 50 percent over fair market value for affected trucks.

Part of the reason the trucks are netting so much money is Toyota's promise to value any Tacoma at excellent condition, even if it is far from it. It is also likely an image-saving move to get the bad feeling out of a customer's mouth about the quality and reliability of Toyota products, not to mention side-stepping the potential liability resulting from a truck's frame breaking at speed.
The practice reminds of Honda's launch of the Civic in the U.S. back in the early '70s, and replacing its panels at no charge due to premature rusting.

So the '95-'00 Tacomas have frames w/premature rust problems.......and then the '06-'07s spontaneously accelerate??

Damn.....looks like the bubble IS bursting!

Hey friends, join us for a ride in the 1981 Toyota Flashback Machine.
Where you can get a truck frame, yes any truck frame in rust red corrosion.
With body panels to match.

Lies and Propaganda! We all know Toyota makes the best cars and trucks, this rust condition is just a minor issue and Toyota is dealing with it accordingly. You may continue buying your beloved Toyota, and be certain that none of them are affected.

This is the beginning of the end.
GM's products are looking and functioning better than ever, while Toyota's quality problems are starting to show.
I think a better phrase would be "the end of the beginning" to paraphrase Mr. Churchill. These early defeats of Toyondasan are similar to the early defeats of Hitler and Mussolini in Europe and N. Africa that prompted Churchill's s speech. There is still a long and bloody road ahead for Detroit.

All I see is some excellent PR. They have the cash and want to retain the customer. It's an incentive, but on the used vehicle. I would guess that Toyota figures it'll keep a customer, keep it's resale values high in customers' minds, all the while giving the finger to the other auto manufacturers.

In a way, it's just Toyota standing by its product. I'm sure it'll earn a lot of loyalty from those Tacoma owners.

Its unfortunate when GM had the cash to do this as well they didnt in the past.

Good news is alot of new GM products can hold their own so as Toyota continues to slip folks wont get into a problem machine with GM.

I work with a guy that bought a Tacoma last year for $4,000 and just got a check for $11,000 from Toyota. He went and bought another one the next day.

Sounded like a pretty good deal. Anyone have an old Tacoma they would like to sell?

Judging from other threads on this website, Honda is not addressing their manual transmission issues and they have enough money to do right by the customer. How Toyota is handling the Tacoma rust issues tells me they are more trust worthy than Honda.

Agreed, besides it is the easiest way to get these potentially bad products off the road without too many people knowing it was a serious problem.

They may have learned from the OIL SLUDGE problem they had pretended as a customer fault, not an engineering mistake.

Sure, trade on a new one that accelerates out of control....trade one accident waiting to happen for another...

'95 was the first year Toyota turned to an American supplier (Dana, I believe) to build a C-channel frame for what became known as the Tacoma, presumably to keep costs down. I usually hear good things about Dana, but many Tacoma owners do not approve of the frame construction beginning in this model year. Anyway, it sounds like insufficient sealant probably caused rust to set in prematurely. Too bad, because the Tacoma (until the 05 redesign) was the last cool mini-truck you could find.

Now some guy that has a rusty Tacoma who was thinking of defecting to Chevy and buying a Colorado will say "Well, Toyota DOES stand behind their product, so maybe I should try another Tacoma".

GM!!! Are you watching this? Are you paying attention? Next time you have this problem, and you are run by humans so you will. THIS is what you should do. This is why a good firend of mine will not drive Fords anymore. To many problems with two differnt Focus' both with fewer than 100,000 miles.

THIS is how you keep loyal customers!!!!!!

It's a brilliant PR move, keeps customers happy, costs less than you expect, and also is a great way to unload some of their, *ahem* excess pickup capacity.

It's like some of these stupid mailings I get from local car dealers "Dear Mister Wagon Of Fury, we need your 5 year old econobox and will pay top dollar for it !!". Right, car dealers wants my used car, Uh-huh. Like it wont go right to auction.

Leave it to Toyota to turn a lemon into lemonade (literally).

They make decent but boring vehicles. But they are absolutely the kingpins at marketing said vehicles. In the final analysis that's what's really important,i.e. putting fannys in seats and moving metal. It's just a business. They handle the business side of it better than any other vehicle maker.
