DETROIT -- Toyota Motor Co.p. is making changes at the top of its North American operations, announcing Monday that Toshiaki Taguchi will step down next month as president and chief executive and be replaced by Hideaki Otaka.

The 63-year-old Taguchi, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America Inc. for the past four years, will return to Japan and serve as a senior adviser to the parent company.

Otaka has spent nearly his entire career in international operations for Toyota Motor Corp., Japan’s largest automaker. He currently serves as president and CEO of Delphys Inc., a Toyota subsidiary.

Toyota Motor North America spokeswoman Trina Visceglia said it’s not uncommon for Toyota executives to periodically rotate to different positions within the company.
