Toyota confirms Prius-based Lexus hybrid for Europe

Toyota has finally confirmed what's been rumored for months, that a new hybrid is coming for its upmarket Lexus brand based on the underpinnings of the Toyota Prius. The Prius itself is about to undergo a major reworking, as the third-generation of the iconic hybrid will debut in January at the Detroit Auto Show. According to Lexus officials, the Prius-based Lexus will go on sale in Europe for 2010, and we're guessing the U.S. will get that model too. A second dedicated hybrid model will reportedly also join the Lexus ranks and be larger than the Prius-based car. We don't have too many details yet on either of these new Lexuses, except that they will be more performance-oriented than their Prius sibling. A high-luxe Prius, as long as it doesn't get too pricey, may be just what the doctor ordered for the struggling Lexus brand.

Great. A Corolla-based Lexus. Wonderful. Way to go Lexus!!! You keep taking pages out of GM's crappy playbook, and sooner or later, you'll be in the same position as GM.

What is wrong with this is that this car doesn't reflect the values of the Lexus brand. Plush, soft, luxurious. IN A COROLLA???
This is just another exercise in offering an $10,000 car with a $5,000 battery option for $30,000.
Europeans are smarter than Americans and will see right through this.

The Prius is not based on the Corolla in any way. It's a clean slate platform.

This is the large relatively untapped market that GM is looking to get part of with the Volt, that Toyota is looking to keep in house. That segment is the buyer that wants a certain level of amenities but sees no reason to pissaway money on gas. Yes that buyer can afford to spend $400-$600 a month on fuel, but WHY? Why spend $500 a month when $200 a month will accomplish the same purpose?

BTW you need to keep abreast of the evolution of battery prices here. $2599 is full retail price if a battery pack had to be replaced. That's not the OEM cost. Some places are discounting the price under $2000 already.

Pshh.

In all honesty, toyota can do whatever the hell they want so long as they keep destroying themselves.

LOL, I was actually thinking the same thing.
The sad part is, Toyota will more than likely bring this to the states also. Hell, I'm sure it will be built in Mississippi. There will be plenty of stupid Americans that will snap this up just like the Prius. The media won't slam it for being a rebadge with a different nose either, just watch!

It is?? Prius is on a modified Corolla platform and is supposed to get on the iQ platform as well. At least that was my understanding.

The difference is that this is a Lexus. Call it the PS. So this Lexus "PS" rolls into town and is to compete with a Chevy?? Seriously?

What we have here is a Lexus "PS" that doesn't quite fit into the Lexus mold of cars. Their best move would be to make a Lexus IS Hybrid.

You bring a point I was thinking about too. And Lord forbid, Lexus uses the words "green" or "environment" in an advertisement......or they be sued by the BMACBOAIFO (British Mad At Other Countries Because Our Auto Industry Failed Organization).

If I were Toyota, I wouldn't print a single word with hybrids advertisements in EU....only the brand, model, and mpg figures.

Why not just make the ES a hybrid. They can call it the Lexus ES-H :)

Given how Toyota's doin' in Europe - and Lexus worldwide - and the bill that just past....... this just may end up a collectors item of sorts - one of the last Lexus vehicles introduced in Europe before they pulled the plug - pun intended.
