There’s no longer any need to wonder whether the Yanks can build a performance saloon to challenge Europe’s best.

The faces of the German testers at the Caddy’s launch said it all; the answer is 'yes'.

It's not possible to say for sure whether the CTS-V’S new V8 was actually better than BMW's remarkable V10 M5, but there's no doubt its handling, performance and driver appeal were well and truly in the ballpark.

I believe every review I've read is favorable. Obviously, GM can be more than competitive when they choose to be. Drop a few product lines in the U.S. and use this "take no prisoners" approach with what's remains and perhaps GMNA could be profitable again, IMO.

Nice. I like it when reviewers look at a car with an open mind. Can't wait for all of the magazine comparisons later in the year.

Gorgeous inside and out, performs, and is reasonably priced. Man, what a concept.

The more I look at the new CTS the more it looks like a baby Sixteen. How I so wish the car above the CTS were already out. It would definitely look like a 7/8ths scale Sixteen, especially as that's what Lutz said the upper end Cadillac would be sized at.

Which makes me wonder. At 7/8ths the size of the Sixteen that would make it a bit smaller than the DTS. Hmmm... A 7/8ths Sixteen with a v12 with AFM and 2-Mode would make a very fuel efficient car and one that is easily luxury. That would be an awesome setup. Too bad GM abandoned the v12 work.

Looks like a good car, with a sorted interior, but sorry to say it will still struggle. Firstly it's too heavy. Second it's a 6.2 litre V8. Third it's got the wrong badge.

This car is going up against lighter, more fuel efficient European cars. The Europeans have Diesel V8's and V6's. They are lighter and have recognised badges on them.

The biggest competitor to this is Holdens own Monaro. So really it's a GM own goal. The real question is why can't SAAB do something more like this fire breathing dragon, but lighter and more fuel efficient?

The weight is not a problem. The car will get decent gas mileage when compared to other cars in this class (E55/65, BMW M5, Audi RS6, etc.). Also, who thinks the Audi RS6 is a lightweight? Now the badge, the consumer will have to make up their own mind about that.

We haven't heard the official word on the english opinion untill its on top gear.
agreed If Clarkson Likes it and spares it from his usual American car ridicule. Then that's a good sign indeed.

Bullenscheisse, as they say in Germany.

Top Gear is a crock, fronted by three comedians, the most prominent of which is the noisome loudmouth, Jeremy Clarkson. He knows diddley-squat about the industry or about engineering. He has made a career out of cracking stupid one-liners whilst driving cars rapidly around an airfield. His opinion counts for jack all. Trust me, I've met him.

If you want the definitive English/UK opinion, try CAR Magazine, widely believed to be the best UK magazine, even though it is past its best in my view.

NEVER confuse Clarkson's bombastic, risible outpourings with prevailing English/British opinion.

Having said all that, I thought Autocar's write up on the CTS-V was pretty objective (Autocar, a weekly magazine, is a pretty good read, actually, and is the world's oldest surviving car journal, founded 1895).

Clarksons reviews maybe rubbish sometimes but he's a pretty good entertainer why do you think Top Gear is so popular in the first place? Personally though I want to see how this car performs on Motorweek. Motorweek has always been a neutral party on almost all of their car reviews and unlike consumer reports or car and driver where there is an obvious bias towards cars from the Orient. Motorweek has never really showed any bias in their reviews. They'll point out flaws and mistakes but overall they are usually pretty positive on their reviews

I'm not trying to flame here, but I think there are some factual issues here.

First, there are no EPA numbers on the CTS-V yet, so how can you claim that the European cars are more fuel efficient? The M5 only does 11 city 17 hwy. Obviously somebody who is buying this M5 or any other car in this class isn't very concerned with gas mileage.

Then you start to talk about the non V version of the CTS because you're talking about the competition's Diesel V8's and V6's. Here's another fact problem, the CTS IS going to be sold with a 2.9L Diesel in Europe.

Finally, I'm pretty sure that the Monaro isn't even built any more. How can it be the CTS's competition?

Again, I'm not trying to flame, and I'm sure that I'm not 100% in some of my "facts", but I did notice some things here that didn't seem quite right.

What the heck is a Performance Saloon? Bloody Imperialists.
Saloon means sedan. Just like how Boot means trunk, Cupay means Coupe and Bonnet means hood. Just watch a few episodes of top gear and you'll get the hang of it

It's about time someone told it as it is. This is an amazing sedan, I am surprised that any of the English like it though.
