I mean, the BMW 3-Series is little more than a European taxi (in Europe, anyway). This would make the BMW 1-Series lower than a taxi. A direct competitor to the Toyota Corolla, perhaps? But this glorified European econo-box costs over $40,000!
Why?

What's a $17,000 taxi in Europe is a $55,000 luxury car in our country. This says nothing about BMW; they're just in the business of making cheap taxi's for the global taxi fleet, that's all. It does, however, have everything to say about rich people in this country and how stupid they are.
BMW is robbing the wealthy in this country by selling them European econo-boxes and taxi's with vinyl-trimmed interiors for the same money that can fetch a Cadillac or Lexus and the CEO of BMW is laughing all the way to the bank.

What kind of European taxi service runs a BMW 3 series? Usually it is BMW 5 series or MBZ E-class and similar "large" cars.

Where is the $17 000 European taxi? Hell where is the $17 000 American taxi?

When I was in Finland, this is one of the taxis I took... Certainly looks nicer than my daily driver.... However on the inside, it wasn't that luxurious... Cloth seats with vinyl door panels that were peeing off, etc. And the engine sounded like the Quad-4 in my old grand am.

The Audi Taxi I took, on the other hand was fantastic on the inside. I think it was a privately owned taxi, (or at least a private company) cuz the driver gave me his business card, and it made it look that way.

(And by the way, gas in Finland was over $8.00 USD a gallon)

The purpose of the 1 series is to bring the sporty feeling back to the BMW, similar to the iconic BMW 2002.

1-series really isn't "cheap" per se. But the car is most certainly a performer.

That's why the Audi Taxi I rode in Holland was so nice. Leather seats, and a petrol engine. (I remember becuase I was talking to the driver about engines, cuz most of the taxis I've ridden in were diesel). His audi was a 2.0T. It was pretty peppy, as he seemed to have a lead foot when he was driving.

I did?

^^^$40,000 econo-box.

Why must I show links to prove everything I type? When will you people just take my word for it?
*sighh*
Of course you would use the absolute most upscale model.

Here.

This is what most people will buy. A 128i Coupe, much much less than the $40,000 and $55,000 that you quoted.
And 230HP with a 3.0L I-6 engine? Hardly an econo-box.
