So, whatever became of this Alpha platform that was supposed to underpin the entry Cadillac and Pontiac G6? Has it been cancelled too? You would think that GM would accelerate its development (if it's still a go) since all of the large rwd car programs seem to be getting cancelled.

If this platform is canceled, I would say that it would single-handily kill both the Pontiac and Cadillac brands. Cadillac needs to be RWD to compete against other European and Japanese brands, and Pontiac could help to spread the cost. This should be where the ATS/BTS for Cadillac come from, and turn this brand into a relevant company again. And for Pontiac, I'm hoping that the RWD G6 is exciting as the new G8, if not much, much better.
