personally, the interior ergonomics of the ION's backseat took a step back compared to the first gen S-Series. i spent a good 5 years mulling around in the back of my dad's SL1 before i was old enough to get my licence, and hopping in the backseat of the ION sedan made me feel claustrophobic. just my two cents
TCC Reviews The 2004 Saturn ION Quad Coupe
Last year, the all-new ION arrived to replace the long-outdated SL-Series Saturns that made their debut back in 1990 along with the Saturn brand. Available both as a normal four-door sedan and as a quirky new Quad Coupe design - with two half-size rear doors that are hinged at the back - the ION aims to recapture Saturn's target small-car buyers.
At first glance, the ION is roomier and more substantial in nearly every way than the SL it replaces, and it's much more competitive with the current competition than its predecessor ever was. Dimensionally, the changes are just an inch or two for wheelbase, width, and height, with more length due to overhang, and the cabin is correspondingly just a bit larger. The ION is a few hundred pounds heavier, too.

I think that, based on the reviews that tend toward nit-picking and away from the merits of the car, the ION is quite good.
Ghranted, Chapel Hill -IS- Saturnville if really were such a place, but it is a definite success here.
As for the Ecotec, and the criticisms toward its lack of smoothness, I'll argue that it's an artifact of the timing chain, which more than offsets both the timing belts of its competitors, and the overall undesirability of its 1.9L predecessor.
I hope the best for the ION Redline.
