A hood scoop... on a Mazda?
May or may not make it to production.. They test a lot of turbo prototypes with hood scoops [or big bulges in the hood] for cooling reasons. They may not have a hood designed for it yet.

I think it looks superb, and I bet you the performance will outdo everything in it's class again. It's a very impressive vehicle I just wish it was AWD :[. That said, the only thing I dislike Mazda for doing is all their faux-altezza taillight creations. Most of them look... too "space age."... but that could be me just nit picking.

I am surprised how much the new hatch's rear looks like the old hatch's rear.

Why not? If the supposedly new turbo 2.5L has a top-mount intercooler (like the outgoing turbo 2.3L), then it's no surprise that it has a hood scoop.

It's probably Mazda's response to the lack of a hood scoop on the outgoing MS3.

genjy,
Not to get too far off topic but the proposed engine for the Mazda above seems to finally be confirmed for the C30.

I think the new Mazdaspeed3 will use a turbocharged version of the new Mazda/Ford 2.5L i4.

The Focus RS and the C30R will use the high-performance versions of the Volvo turbo 2.5L i5.

If the new MS3 used some form of the Volvo 2.5L T5, then the car wouldn't have a hoodscoop, since the T5 engines have always used FMIC.

Your right. The Focus has always used a FMIC. I prefer the T5 so that's good since I like the C30 the best of the three. 300HP and AWD would be pretty nice if they can get the DSG in there also.

It looks decent, but it's starting to get bulky in the way of a Vibe or new Matrix. The scoop could be helpful as others have mentioned, this is a turbo I4 likely with a top mount intercooler. It's hard to tell with the camo, but it looks like a better scoop than the typical Subaru, which has an Autozone/Pep Boys appearance.

Looks okay but I hope Mazda gets the nerve to start building production versions of their concepts that are barely watered down. The Nagare series of concepts is awesome....sleek, futuristic and very creative....plus doable.

300HP + AWD + C30 = hot. I like manual though.

I think Volvo's M66 6-sp manual tranny is robust enough to handle 300HP.

If the C30R does get produced and shipped here, then I will wait and pick up an used one. The C30R will cost at least $33k new considering the hardware it has.

The MS3 is always good for an affordable thrill, though.

I'm sure the M66 would work. It would be a daily driver for me and turbo's love automatics so a DSG would be very tempting that's for sure. If they can do it for $33 I would seriously consider it. I'm would be suprised if they could pull it off for that, especially with AWD.
