With the 2009 BMW 7-Series freshly unveiled, it seems like a fitting time for a look at the next Bimmer sedan slated for redesign — the 2010 5-Series. Our latest spy photos provide the clearest look yet at the future design direction of this class-leading luxury sedan.

Sources in Europe claim this BMW will move away from the polarizing design of the current model. Already under development with the internal codename “F10,” the next-generation BMW 5-series will soften the harder lines of the current E60 with more conventional-looking headlights and a cleaner front-end design.

New European pedestrian safety standards are expected to drastically alter the design of many European cars for the worse, but BMW will not only maintain its classic twin-kidney grille design, it will reduce the length of the front overhang.

can't wait to see it without all the camo! Should be an amazing car if the new 7er is any indication.

The new 7 looks like ass, like pretty much everything Bangle touches.
Doubtful this will be any different.

Oh, for the good ol' days when BMW's were actually good looking...

I respectfully disagree. I very much like the look of the new 7, the front end is bold and sleek to my eye, and the rear is very well integrated. It also has a classic 7er profile.

IMO, BMW can do no wrong with its styling. People will buy it, regardless of style. I mean, look at the X6, its certainly not the most beautiful vehicle on the road, or the most efficent, but its still desirable to some because its a Bimmer..

I agree with you and also think the 335 coupe makes all but the past M model 3 series look old and outdated.

Bangle has been very very good for BMW.

BMW chose to radically change their design because of all the negativity they were receiving throughout the years about their design philosophy at the time. I believe one BMW senior rep's verbatim as far as the complaints were concerned was, "Same sausage, different length". In effect, all of their cars looked the same, and their customer base (..which doesn't consist of forum junkies) was growing tired of it. Sales were down on all vehicles, and only the 3-series managed to continue to sell rather successfully. It was the owners of the company who approached Bangle (..who is generously loved by the company and has since been promoted) with the proposal for a radical change. Bangle didn't pull this decision out of his ass.

All Bangle has done is show Bimmerphiles how good they had it.

I see your points about it being bold and sleek but the new 7 series, to me, looks like a giant pig with those ridiculously oversized "BMW" openings in the grill

oink oink!

Until the car market died along with the economy BMW couldn't be happier.
BMW was so pleased with the ghastly 7 that they quickly toned it down.... same as GM did with the Aztek.
