We go to lunch and catch a new Buick.

What It Is: A mildly camouflaged 2016 Buick LaCrosse caught testing near our Ann Arbor offices. We managed to squeeze off a few shots of one car, which was running among a pack of six identically cloaked vehicles. Although the psychedelic camouflage now favored by most makers is present on its flanks, heavy shrouding was placed over the front and rear fascias. Thanks to the minimal effort taken to hide the greenhouse and body sides, we can tell the LaCrosse has a gently sloping backlight, a crease along its lower body, and a trademark character line that runs from the rear door to the haunches. It’s hard to make out in the photos, but a Buick grille was clearly visible behind the front mask when viewed from straight ahead. A Toyota Avalon was tagging along with the entourage for benchmarking purposes.

Why It Matters: With the recent debut of the gorgeous Buick Avenir concept at the 2015 Detroit auto show, it’s clear the porthole brand feels it still has something to say. While we expect the Avenir—or a model wearing its styling DNA—to eventually appear at the tippy top of the Buick lineup, the maker nevertheless needs to keep its other offerings contemporary. Introduced for the 2010 model year, the second-generation LaCrosse was updated for the 2014 model year and will give way to a more dramatically styled car with a more premium aesthetic.

I'm sure the next LaCrosse is going to be great looking, but to be honest, after seeing the Avenir in person last night, I think anything new from Buick will pale in comparison:

Build the Avenir, Buick!

Looks good.

Would look even better with a reborn Park Avenue sitting on the lot next to it. ;)

That looks pretty good.
I'm very hopeful that Buick will sweat the details and kick the next Lacrosse (and Verano) up a notch. Their market acceptance is already strong, and I'm convinced they could quite easily be pushed half a notch higher. Actually, moving the Verano up 2-3 grand and the Lacrosse up 4-5 grand would give a bit more breathing room for the next Regal.

I also was at the show yesterday. The Avenir is stunning in person.
any guesses on when it will be unveiled?? NYC or Chicago? still waiting on the Envision.
I like they shape and styling cues we can see thinly under the camo. I think this is going to be more aerodynamic in it's shape where the current one can tend to look a little chunky in some aspects.

I'm thinking New York.
It's no Avenir, but it does look good.
I like those wheels a lot.
I'm hoping the new Lacrosse loses the short hood look, which it looks like it does in the spy shots.

In the meantime before a Omega Buick lands, the updated LaCrosse will have to do duty. Overall shape looks good to me even with the camo hiding styling details.

In Car and Driver's spyshot #8, is that a Buick "sweepspear" on the rear quarter... or more like a Chevrolet Impala design line?

I'm glad that Car and Driver caught the vehicle, but only 10 of the 36 images in their gallery are the NG LaCrosse. (Photos 11-36 are the 2014 LaCrosse.)
Aero concerns seem to be eliminating what was once the rear deck. Everything's going to be 'fastback' from now on?

I like what I can see.
I can dig it. This + a Park Avenue would make a wonderful sedan line up.

Doesn't like we'll be seeing another late '80s Mercury Cougar-style rear end again...
