My friend's Avalon apparently decided to crap out majorly...

Engine light is on, weird noises and smells coming from the engine. She says that it sounds like she's permanently revving the engine and there isn't any oil on the dipstick even though she just got it changed last week.

Any ideas?

No good ones. It's possible they left the drain plug out or didn't tighten the filter completely. Although it's probably too late, don't run it again without adding oil and checking for leaks. If that's the case, the shop should be liable for damages.

what year is the Avalon in question Fenwick and are there any dark spots on the ground under the car? thats usually a good indicator of a leak.

probably a problem with the oil filter or oil pump. But swampfox is right there have been instances where lazy technicians forgot to put the new oil back in or some other oil related part

It's a 2006. Should still be under warranty, so they're having it towed to the dealer tomorrow.

Doesn't sound good! Why would you let the person run the vehicle with no oil in it? You must be a true GM fan to let your friend ruin their Yota to get a new GM product!!
Haha. I didn't know about it until she told me about an hour ago.

But I'm ready with GMU discounts for a Malibu if she needs one...:D

Do you realize this is a GM forum????
It is and I dislike toyota as much as the next guy but when a car acts up no matter what brand it is you have to put bias aside for a moment and give advice on what to do

Yes...I think I would know, especially since I've been here longer than you have. A car is still a car, whether it be a Malibu or Impala or Avalon or whatever. Same basic functions, same basic operation. Problems like this on my friend's Avalon happen on GM vehicles as well. And as much as I don't like toyota, I'm willing to help a friend in need.

I'm sorry to say, I don't believe that that is a coincidence. I expect the dealer will find the motor to be trashed. Also expect the oil changer to strongly deny any wrong doing.
Actually, the dealer says that the car was saved right on time. Just a little longer and the engine would be shot. Also, it turns out that something was leaking, and the part in question was included in a recall.

That's good to hear for your friend's sake. Be sure to get the details on what happened. Inquiring minds here will want to know. :D

Man that generally sucks, and I hate to see anyone have to deal with issues with their car. But I have noticed a lot of my Toyota loving friends complaining of late. My brother-in-law's on his 3rd transmission in his 2007 Camry. He is not impressed. The smug attitude he usually had about driving Toyota vs. my GM is totally and utterly gone. At least one good thing came from the failure :).

Wow three tranny swaps on an 07'. I suspect there has not been a recall yet...any explanation as to why? Sounds like his car is eating them.
