I had just driven away from the car wash yesterday in my '07 Cobalt with 46,000 miles, when my SERVICE AIR BAG warning light came on with chimes and warning lamps. I thought maybe water had gotten where it shouldn't be so I went back to work thinking it would dry out in the heat (90+). I came out after work and the lights/alarm still went off. I drove home, unplugged the battery, waited 15 minutes and reconnected to reset the system. No luck alarm came back on. Any ideas before I wait two weeks to get it in the dealer. Anyone know if there is a problematic sensor and how to find it so I can get this glaring red airbag icon to go away?

Thanks in advance,

jim

While driving, the "service air bag" warning message displayed on the driver information center and the chime sounded on my 2008 Impala LTZ at 999 miles. The car had been ordered / purchased new and never wrecked or damaged - or driven through a car wash.

The owner's manual stated to take the car to the dealer immediately. The next morning, I took it to the dealer where I purchased the car.

The service advisor said there was a TSB to reprogram "the computer". When I received the car the invoice for repairs, it stated the instrument panel cluster had been reprogrammed and a seperate repair was completed, at 1 1/2 hours labor, to repair "wiring". The service advisor was not helpful and could not explain what all was done by the mechanic.

I have not had the message reappear with now over 5,000 miles on the car. I know this doesn't address a 2007 Cobalt, but I suspect there is a wiring or sensor problem. There may even be a TSB to address the problem for your Cobalt. I would take the car (or tow it) to a dealer had have it evaluated and repaired ASAP.

Although my car was fixed under the new-car warranty, I was very upset with the poor quality and failure of a critical safety component with less than 1,000 miles on the car. I don't believe that GM's quality is improving.

Good luck - let us know what you determine.
