Driving through Kentucky over the weekend and stopped by "Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace" near Hodgenville and parked right next to a 2005 Corvette!!! Saw it from behind and said "Hey look at the cool Vette" and then walked past it and said "Holy crap!!!! It's a 2005!!!". My parents got out of their car and I had my mom take my picture standing in front of it. As we were getting ready to walk away, the guy driving it and his wife come up and I asked him if it was ok if I took some pictures of it and he said "Sure, and I'll do you one better....hop inside and have your picture taken." I looked at him dumbfounded and asked him if he was serious and he said yeah, go ahead.
He walked over to the driver's door with me and held out the key fob and told me to open the door. That touch pad handle & keyless entry is awesome!!! You just sorta touch the pad and the door pops open, there's no effort involved. He told me to go ahead and sit down and then my mom took my picture. He started talking about all of the differences and then mentioned the heads-up-display and said I'd have to turn on the car to see it. So the next thing he does is put is hand with the key fob inside the car and says "Push that button on the dash right there." I pushed it and that awesome 400hp LS2 roared into life. He started talking about all of the different things the HUD could do and other things about the engine and then he said "Push the bottom of that same button" so I did and it shut the engine off.
I didn't catch his last name, but his first name was Rick and he's one of the Managers at the Bowling Green plant. He was an awesome guy and he and his wife were really nice. We talked to them for a good 20 minutes about the car and all of the differences and improvements. He said it was a pre-production version and was VIN 26.
He briefly mentioned the Z06 and said that they were working on it to be highly competitive and much more powerful. I mentioned reading about 480hp to 500hp and carbon fiber and he just smiled and said that he couldn't confirm the power but to expect high numbers and said that he couldn't say what but that there would be carbon fiber body panels. :bounce:
I know that in the past I knocked the styling of the new Vette, however seeing it in person has given me a whole new outlook on the car. It is by far more beautiful in person and none of the pictures do it justice. As soon as my mom develops her film and gets my copies I'll post them on here for everyone's viewing pleasure.
