Rob Cohen to Direct Pontiac GTO T.V. Advertising

DETROIT - Action-film director Rob Cohen directed television advertising introducing the 2004 Pontiac GTO. The ad first airs during ABC's Monday Night Football telecast tonight, November 3, and offers viewers a glimpse of the performance offered by the new GTO.

"Pontiac's new 2004 GTO is a powerful modern performer," says Pontiac-GMC General Manager Lynn Myers, "and we felt that Rob Cohen had both the vision and the passion to make the GTO come alive on the screen."

Cohen, whose 2002 film "xXx" featured a 1967 GTO in a high profile role, is known for his ability to create stylish, high-adrenaline automotive action sequences, including "The Fast and the Furious". Cohen's abilities will complement the attributes of the new GTO, a modern-day incarnation of the classic performance machine. With a 5.7-liter, 350 horsepower engine linked to either a four-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, the new GTO is capable of going from zero-to-60 mph in as little as 5.3 seconds and needs only 13.8 seconds to cover the quarter-mile.

Rob Cohen is a performance automobile enthusiast who actually proposed the creative collaboration with Pontiac. "I'm very familiar with GTOs of the past and what they meant on the strip and on the line. The new GTO carries on a truly American tradition and will, in turn, create its own legends on the streets and in the hearts of those who know the difference between gas and hype."

Ahh man, that commercial sucked!

Even though I did kind of chuckle when I realized the smoke was coming from the GTO's spinning tires. :)

"Could have been worse" - 2004 GTO Anthem
Just saw it. :D

Start out with a big cloud of smoke, you get a glimpse of a car, then a headlight, then it cuts to a view of a rear wheel spinning. Then announcer than says, "GTO is coming" or something like that. Pretty clever.
It did somewhat remind me of older GTO commericals I have watched.

I don't know why, but it reminds me of the one with the creepy guy who just talks about the "GTO for 1967". With the Silver GTO.
It was all a tease to me :pain:
I'm sure they'll get better over time :bounce:
I thought it was pretty good considering it was directed by the same guy as *shudder* The Fast and The Furious (not to mention xXx). Could have been a lot worse!

Like this:

 What?
That's to illustrate the "It could have turned out worse part"...

:drevil:
If anyone is interested in comparing/contrasting today's ad with something from the peak year for muscle cars, this guy has a copy of "The Humbler" TV ad for the 1970 GTO.

There's a link to it on his website at http://www.jimhoeg.com/jimmy/interests/1970gto.htm.

A whole different feel than modern advertising, but I still think it kinda works. Plus, you get a look at the very rare open exhaust option - one that was installed on only a handful of '70s.
a Civic ? puh'lease. You were obviously born in the 1980's, and the first president you remember was Clinton. You were in diapers when I was in high school.

Naw, man, this is American muscle. There was a time when men were men.

Detroit's on its way back ! At least the Big 3 are on the way back, not so sure about the Lion's.

Yes, I was born in the 80's. The first president I remember is Bush Sr. And the line about the Civic in my original post was a sarcastic gibe at the fact that the director of the GTO commercial also directed The Fast and the Furious. I was making fun of ricers, whom I despise. I know Camaros, I love Camaros and other musclecars, past and present. I was probably in diapers while you were in high school, but when i was in diapers I was also riding in my mom's Z28. Just because I'm younger than you or the original musclecars doesn't mean I can't enjoy them.
60's and 70's pontiac ads were so corny you can't help but laugh at them.
"The Humbler" ad was a pretty good one. That's pretty much why you'd buy a GTO.

go to page 2, then download the 68 firebird "The Great American Sport" ad.
You'll wonder how they sold any Firebirds that year.

All the movies on that site are worth watching though.
OH talking about commercials.. I have 2 very flaming hot ones of third gen camaros... one dates back around 82-84... the other one is 86. the 82-84 one.. very very flaming...

oh yeah... when is the next one coming out? Or when are they gunan show it again? dam it i need more!!
is he responsible for the one i've seen lately.. where they show a debadged lancer and you hear samual l jackson say "what would possess a grown man to drive a car like this" then shows new grand prix and talks of better styling and performance? kinda like that one
He makes fun of ricers? That's awesome, that's exactly the kind of ad Pontiac should be running.

yeah.. but its not a riced out lancer, just a plane jane looking one. would have been alot funnier if it was hot pink with flames and huge wing. is it not running in all markets? i've seen it dozens of times already in houston.
I'm from the Detroit area and I've never seen it. I've seen the GTO ad a few times.

I don't watch a ton of TV though.

They just started running in my area, but I did not know that Sam Jackson was doing the voice over...extra bonus points for cool for Pontiac.
