Remember when GM paid Fiat about 2 billion dollars not to make GM buy Fiat out?

That now looks like a really dumb decision. Fiat has been enjoying record sales growth and is the fastest growing brand in Europe. Worse still it has a range of small cars that could easily have sold under a GM brand name in the USA. Then there is Alfa which has been doing well and Ferrari. Another great brand. Which just leaves Lancia.... well nevermind. But the point is this. Selling Fiat was a major mistake. And it could prove costly.

You know, I think we all knew inside that when GM paid Fiat to go away, it would turn out this way.

It just seems to be the way things have gone for GM in it's recent history.

OK, lets do a little poll

Hands up, who thinks that GM has too many brands and too much product overlap... OK everyone put your hands down...

Now hands up, who thinks that all of these goofy mergers are a good idea...

NONE of them are. All they do is bring more models and brands to the fold when we already have at least three divisions too many.

All of these mergers have been mistakes... Even the fiat deal which got us Diesel engines... Do the math, I wish GM Finance did once in a while, it is easy, simply divide the billions lost in that merger by the number of engines we got/used... You will see that it would have been cheaper to buy them at full retail.
