References to Buick products running above 120-mph are unheard of in recent memory, however that is about to change. This weekend the all-new 2012 Buick Regal GS will be participating in the bi-annual Silver State Classic Challenge (SSCC) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This Sunday Regal GS lead engineer Bill Rietow will pilot the new GS with drive quality powertrain engineer John Townsend navigating Nevada’s State Highway 318 during the bi-annual SSCC road rally. Team Buick will be participating in the 120-mph class, with a top speed in the class at 140-mph.

The SSCC is in its 24th year and leverages a 90-mile stretch of Nevada’s highway for the rally. According to the SSCC website, vehicle speed classes range from 90-mph to 200-mph, with class placement dependent upon both vehicle safety features and driver experience.

Rietow is a member of both Sports Car Club of America and Corvette Club of Michigan as an autocross racer. Together, he and Townsend will be competing against 30 to 40 other vehicles in the class.

“The GS is the most performance-oriented Regal in Buick’s sport sedan portfolio, and the Silver State Classic will be the perfect venue to test its mettle,” Rietow said. “As a racer, I know how thrilling this event will be, but it also serves as an opportunity for us to gain invaluable insights about vehicle and engine performance that directly benefit our customers.”

Regal GS is powered by GM’s turbocharged ECOTEC 2.0-liter with 270 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. Unlike most modern vehicles today, the GS top speed is not electronically limited. GM claims that they had the GS at 152-mph during their testing, making it the fastest Buick ever produced.

In fact, Buick even noted that the coveted Buick GNX top speed was electronically limited to 124.5-mph.

Regal GS arrives in Buick dealerships later this fall as a 2012 model, with the ability to travel in excess of 120-mph, of course.

This is so cool, hopefully this will be a good image builder and not hurt Buick trying to build a performance sort of image. Not the level of Caddy/BMW but still sporty luxury. GO BUICK GO!!!
Very cool, I hope this is a sign of things to come from Buick!
It looks so hawt in that red .... so want this car
Cool, IIRC regular Regal Turbo is limited to 150 mph. The guys from Speed TV ran them 140 mph on an autobahn (min. 1:36).

I wish this colour was available for 2011 MY.
The last gen GS was capable of 145 mph or so if I remember correctly.
GM if you want insight how about the haldex awd you were parading the concept around with, that would certainly help on the road rally. Just saying.

Maybe the powertrain and lead engineer are trying to show the gripers that the Haldex AWD and the 2.8 TV6 really aren't necessary after all. Sort of engineering speak for "just saying".

Given how much money they want for it, you'd think they'd make the effort to "attempt to justify the price", thankyou very much.

Fantastic fun event and a smart thing to build street rep.

I did the fall event way back in 99 in a Cadillac and not just a Cadillac, but a great big cadillac, a great big very red Cadillac.

With the top speed limiter programmed out of course. Ever seen a DeVille coming by you at 154 mph?

why didnt GMI post the IL road test of the GS from last week? They are the only source that has tested it yet (data only, not full report) and I didnt see it here. It generated over 90 (mostly negative) comments in insideline. So many claim not to like the car, yet they couldnt stop talking about it. The group think and anti-GM fervor on IL is stronger than ever.

I think you just answered your own question.

It has been posted since Sunday: http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f21/track-tested-2012-buick-regal-gs-105683/

I'm going to wait for the buff books. IL has a few too many axes to grind, particularly with GM.

COOL!!! :hyper:

I'm going to run this once before I die, or the one that is in Nebraska, or the one that is in Texas. Maybe all three.

What speed class did you compete in?

I just went and read the comments...not true, most said they like/love the car but are disappointed with the powertrain's performance. I agree 100%

how do you call criticism of the powertrain's performance "anti-GM"? Is everyone supposed to like it, regardless of how it performs on acceleration?

I am really getting sick and tired of the "Anti-GM" accusations just because people have negative opinions and/or criticize certain aspects of a car....which are, IMO, justified.

I agree, but besides that IL is always slow on all cars tested...I don't know if its track conditions or they flat out don't know how to launch cars. I suspect its more of the latter than the former.

I did not know the earlier cars were capable of 154 mph, but it makes sense because the earlier Northstars felt stronger and would dyno a little bit higher. How did it feel at that speed, well I must say you have moved into top 10 best post status with this one!
There better be video of this event!
I am really getting sick and tired of the "Anti-GM" accusations d.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
And we're suppose to be surprise of that?
You tired of it because it's the truth......... and the truth about you.
