Despite the soaring cost of gasoline, the popularity of high-performance sports cars is alive and kicking, and we thought it would be intriguing to see how the latest and greatest fared against one another in what could be our most grueling format ever, an all-out romp on four challenging layouts: an autocross, a short road course (Streets of Willow Springs), a long road course (Willow Springs International Raceway) and, for a unique twist, an oval (Auto Club Speedway, formerly California Speedway). We invited experts in each field to get the most out of these 10 cars at each location: eight-time national autocross champion Gary Thomason, former champion road racer Steve Millen and IRL driver Roger Yasukawa. Because of the large-scale nature of this story, not to mention the wear and tear on the cars involved, we asked each of our hotshoes to jump quickly from one car to another, without much by way of familiarization, and provide us with consistent levels of aggression at each challenging venue, stressing safety as the main order of the day. They delivered with flying colors.

BMW M3 Coupe
Chevrolet Corvette Z06
Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR
Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4
Lotus Exige S 240

More and more, it looks like GM needs to put better tires on their cars... not that the Goodyear F1s are a poor tire, but apparently they aren't up to snuff in comparison.

Finally, the BMW M3--a fast entry-level luxury car that rides on a European taxi frame--gets its rightful place near the rear.
Considering the Vette is so old, it finished where I'd expect: mid-pack.
The three top-cars--Viper, GT-R and Porsche--got to their respective positions by having engines with crank horsepower well in excess of 500 horsepower.
The Audi was surprising; I was expecting it to finish by the BMW, not the Vette.

That would make a pretty dog gone nice garage...

They wrote of how despite fuel costing quite a lot, people still buy lots of high performance cars. Yes, fuel costs hit Mustang GTs, but how many Gallardo sales were lost by high fuel prices? I don't think people in the $150,000+ club care that much...

Coulda' fooled me...

:lmao:And whats wrong with taxis? please elaborate. they are chosen for comfort, room, ease of repair, and reliability. In europe, yes, MBs are widely used as taxis and limos and it doesn't work in the US because everyone here is sooo image-consious.

You should have posted the text that goes along with the picture:

"I snapped this shot of a BMW taxi on my way to work a few days ago at the corner of Dunhua and Nanking in Taipei. My friend Jeff says that a lot of car-loving Taiwanese are being forced to turn their babies into taxis just to make the payments."

As I said, 3-series are not used as taxis.

Runflats never will be when everyone else is running PS2's to Pilot Sport Cups.
The GT-R is on runflats, too. Of course, the treadwear rating on them is something like 180 (indicating a very soft compound) compared to a 220 treadwear rating for the F1 Supercar EMTs (not exactly a mileage tire, either).

IMO, Goodyears are over rated (especially for the price).

LOL, owned.

Wow the LP560 is amazing, people talking about the price are talking like people who can't afford one. If I had that kind of money I'd take the Lambo over the GTR every single day.

Isn't the GT-R about 1/4 of the price of the Lambo? I could probably fit the GTR in my budget, but no way could I pay 250K for a car.
