Porsche 911 to be turbo-only; 911 GT3 RS and Cayman GT4 confirmed

Porsche is in the process of transforming its sports car line-up, aiming to balance both the desire of its customers for ever more power and dynamism and the need to radically improve its cars CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.
The first evidence of the new approach will come with the arrival at the Geneva motor show in March of the delayed 911 GT3 RS, a car originally scheduled to have made its global debut in the summer of last year.

Porsche product boss Wolfgang Hatz confirmed not only that the car will be "far more extreme" than the previous GT3 RS but also that it will be the first 911 to be powered by a new generation of flat six engines.

Hatz would not be drawn on the size or output of the engine but did move to quash speculation that it would be the first turbocharged GT3 911. It will be normally aspirated and is expected to produce around 500bhp, a number seen as sufficient to put clear air between it and the extant 468bhp GT3.

So equipped and with what is believed to be a radical aerodynamics package, Porsche’s computer simulations indicate the GT3 RS will be capable of lapping the Nurburgring Nordschleife in comfortably less than 7min 20sec. The current GT3 has been timed at 7min 25sec.

Most dramatically, Hatz confirmed that while the engine will be normally aspirated in the GT3 RS, it will be turbocharged in other 911s, not just for the Turbo models but across the board, ending 51 years of production for the normally aspirated standard 911.

However, Hatz also confirmed that despite comments made by at least one of his predecessors, the new turbocharged flat four engine Porsche has been known to be working on for some years will not find its way into the back of a 911.
Hatz confirmed that the much-scooped Cayman GT4 is indeed on its way and scheduled for a late summer or early autumn delivery, perhaps at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

He also confirmed the development of the car had come under the direction of the Porsche Motorsport department, making it a full member of Porsche’s elite sports car squad, currently peopled by the GT3 and forthcoming GT3 RS.

Finally, Hatz confirmed that Porsche is still working on a supercar project to sit between the 911 and the 918 hypercar. It is believed to be powered by a version of the all-new V8 engine that Porsche is known to be developing for the Cayenne and Panamera.

So new generation of flat six engines...nice:).
Also a new v8...not bad
They had to do this not to loose ground to corvette with their boxer sixes, otherwise, they will be forced to put DOHC V8's in their nine elevens...

When the stingray hangs with the GT3, that a fool driving the Porsche has to wonder why they paid that much.

One drives a Chevy, the other drives a Porsche. That's why. :)

What idiot would buy Porsche (....and not any Porsche ..a GT3 RS) worrying about money or how much cheaper some other car cost? You don't buy Porsche because it is a cheap car.

Do you really think people who buys cars like Aston Martins, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mclaren etc care that Corvette can hang with those cars on the track. If they want Corvette they will buy one.
Buying Porsche and worrying about price...that's funny
Noooooo!!!! That wonderful N/A flat six! I need to buy a 991 Carrera S as while I still can, damn it. :D

You got to ask yourself the question in another way. You are a Porsche head of Product Development team breathing rarefied air at Weissach Germany. The world is at peace and you are living a life of comfort and joy.

Along comes a storied brand with an excellent racing history with a car that is almost a hundred thousand dollars cheaper, packs way more performance and advanced technology than your Porsche and is by all accounts as good or better than your rarified Porche.

I am not sure you would still be like. Well, we are Porsche you know, we have German Engineering, lets continue doing things the way we have always done, there is nothing to worry about.

If you were like that, someone higher up the storied food chain might seek to replace you.

Did you actually read what Porsche is planing to do??
And again..it's the Porsche..they can price their special models so high because people are willing to pay so much money for them...and they are worth it

For example Porsche 918...it cost 900 000+ $. It is faster than almost anything on Nurburgring (and some other tracks)...and it has been sold out.
You think manufacturer like Chevrolet could ask such price for their vehicle? No...not even close.
They can barely ask +80 000$ for their top model Z06.
But I don't see why would someone who can pay 130 000+$ for Porsche GT3 have problems or concerns about cheap price of other cars...others cars are not Porsche. And yes you have to pay for image and name here also.

To keep their pricing, they have to be the best, they cannot afford to let Corvette and others Catch up. Thats my point.

You realize the Z06 already took down the 918 at VIR? That is not good for Porsche.
It took down the 918. Great. It's a hell of a performance car for the money.

But at the end of the day, it's still a Chevy. And the 918, 911, etc. are Porsche cars. And of course, Porsche and Chevrolet do not compete. Not even close.

Tell me why it is not good for Porsche....they've sold out all 918. Porsche is already planning successor.
So in one hand you have GM engineer Jim Mero driving Corvette and in other magazine driver driving Porsche 918.

They do compete ..if you are looking just at performance.
I agree that people who do pay $150k for a Porsche don't care that the Z06 owns their car on the track, but I do believe that Porsche has taken notice of the performance of the Corvette
and they are doing what they need to do to make sure their vehicles are on par. Porsche is a performance brand and right now the Corvette is eating its lunch. Even though Porsche is still
selling every 911 it can make, it has to sting the engineers and management at Porsche a little bit to know that they are behind in the performance dept., and I expect these new engines are
what they have to counter the mighty Vette.
Eating its lunch? Porsche had fourth record year in a row with 189,850 new cars delivered around the world. 30 000 of those vehicles were 911.

Is it affecting sales ?
Is it affecting sales ?
Didn't you hear...people are returning their Porsches. I'm waiting for one Panamera to become very cheap.
Buyer said BMW M4 an M3 beat it on Nurburgring.;)
Well.. BMW M division has been behaving like competition does not exist. First generation CTS V was a joke, second generation was in the conversation. .now..3rd generation is really a problem for them.

I hope Porsche does not ignore corvette. They are pricing higher and higher. . And soon or later with a mid engined one.. its not going to be all bed of roses.
You really think anyone is going to run a track faster than a mid engined corvette?
You really think anyone is going to run a track faster than a mid engined corvette?
Yes..there will always be some faster car sooner or later. For now maybe it is a Mclaren P1 or Laferrari..but sooner or later something even faster will come. Maybe at some point there will be a mid engine corvette at the top.
Even now there is a Radical SR8 LM (fastest "production" car on Nurburgring).
But that won't change people's desire for Porsche. Or any other high expensive car. Not by much
It won't affect Porsche sales for quite a while if Corvette is faster. It's like saying that sales of Silverado pickup would be affected because Caterpillar makes a dozer that can pull more. Yes, but people buying the Silvey want it to do many other things for them than pull. Equally people buying a Porsche want it to do many more things than laps times, such as make them look rich as they park outside a restaurant or club.

That said, of course the Porsche engineers are aware of Corvette and don't like to lose to it. Not because of sales but because they are in that job because they as people love racing and competing in motorsport. No person who is a competitor likes anything else to beat their baby...
